what if i get a better bulb like a 10k or even a 12k for it to replace the 4k that it comes with I am only interested in this one because of the price

HPS is not suitable for reef tanks, or at least it's generally not accepted as such. It is defintely VERY yellow and has very poor spectral output.

However, the auction lists it as a MH system as well. The problem is it doesn't state what the ballast ANSI number is, and so I'm not quite sure what you're buying. But for $175, you can get better deals on far better MH units then what's being offered. I'd pass on the auction.

If I were you, I would get a 250W for clam/SPS, but that maybe just slightly too much heat for a 29 gal tank... what do others think?

I think the 150W unit you linked will work well for a 29 gallon. My friend uses the same setup and can keep most any SPS and clam except on the outer edges.

I had a 250W on a 30, about 12" up. Didn't overheat the tank.

You can get a dual 175 watt MH retrofit fixture from cooltouchlighting on ebay for around $175. I just got one and love it. They also have different types of fixtures or they can build them custom.
