Just thought I'd start a thread to see the funniest things people have overheard or seen in the LFS, either by the salespeople or some of the other customers.
I've got one to get started.

Customer with a 55 gal. reef is being helped by a salesperson. I think he wants to get a fish. As he goes over the possible candidates with the salesperson. He points to a fairy wrasse:" Is that the sailfin blenny." "No, answers the salesman, that's the fairy wrasse." Then the customer points at a purple tang and goes, "That's the hippo tang, right?" "No answers the salesman, that's a purple tang." Customer goes,"They're really hard to keep, right?" "No the salesman goes, they're actually quite easy." Meanwhile, I think to myself that this guy needs a lesson in fish identification.

A bit later, the customer mentions he's having trouble with his corals. The salesman asks his water parameters. The customer says, "Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate between 10 and 20, and pH 7.8." The salesman goes, "7.8!" The customer goes "Yeah." The salesman says, "7.8 is WAY to low, it should be like 8.3." "Really," the customer goes.I think to myself,"Oh boy, this guy needs a lesson in fish identification AND reef water chemistry...

I told a guy @ the LFS I was looking for some metal halide(which they don't carry) and he told me " You don't want to use those they will kill all your corals".

Some guy just bought a 40 gallon setup. The guy then asks about which fish would be good to start out with after his tank cycles. The LFS salesman replies, "How about a school of polka dots (pointing at small panther groupers)? They're great fish for beginners". This was the first and last time I went to this store.

I was at a store and I was visiting with some folks in town for a frag trade. Well one guy I was with had come down to pick up a Ca Reactor from someone. So one of the funniest things I've heard is the owner of the store saying (to someone who had just bought one) that Calcium Reactors are kind of old and outdated and they are being phased out by chemical additives which are really stepping up to bat at maintaining water parameters.

This was before I got an education in reefkeeping so don't lamblast me, at least I know better now.

Went into the local fish store looking for some supplies. Already at home in the 54 gal were 1 panther grouper 8", 1 Volitans Lionfish 8", 7 Damsels 1.5", 1 Bluebird wrasse 5", 1 clownfish 2", 1 snowflake Eel 12".

I asked the fish lady if there were any fish that would get along with the above mix of fish, and I told her how many and how big they were.

Her answer?

A Red Emporer Snapper

Needless to say, My tank now has no fish, and I don't go there anymore.

overheard customer ask salesman how to get rid of fungus on one of his fishes. Salesman replied by saying he could take the fish out and scrape the fungus off with his finger nail!!

Maybe the salesman got fungus and lymphocystis mixed up!!

Until I heard him say the other alternative, fresh water bath!!

Scoop the fish up in a net and hold him under the tap for 30 seconds!!

I could not believe my ears!! I had to jump in and help the poor customer, although I felt bad for making the salesman look like an idiot!

And I quote...

"RO/DI....c'mon, you don't need one of those things...The New York area has great water"

The owner wonders why his saltwater sales are so bad!

Its not that funny, but I did tell a worker not to touch a particular urchin- when I came in the next week he told me had, and he had been up all night crying it hurt so bad.

This is from back when I was in college and working in the LFS. We had a newbie employee that knew his stuff with fish pretty well, but was still learning customer service.

So he's helping out this customer, who is wandering down the saltwater aisle. Customer points to a yellow tang and says gimme. New employee dutifully bags the fish. Customer then points to percula clownfish and says gimme two. Those two. Newbie then spends 15 minutes chasing those two particular clowns (out of a tank of 40 or so) down and bagging them. Customer proceeds down the row and ends up with 5 or 6 fish. I'm thinking Okay, that's a lot of fish at once, but they're all small and I heard Newbie asking what size tank it was, and it was a 125, so it should be okay.

Newbie and customer then carry the half dozen bags toward the register, where newbie stands and chats with the customer while they're rung up. Customer then says...

{{drum roll}}

"Oh, I forgot to ask earlier. These will all get along with my goldfish and betta, right?"

   8O 8O

What I find to be truly amazing and quite disturbing and maybe a little funny is that when people go into a fish store all they see are the dead fish. "Look a dead fish". I always tell then "No he's just sleeping"

Oh, here's one I heard: "Halides will turn all your corals brown."
Anybody who lives in Pennsylvania has probably heard this as well....

After selecting me a Yellow Tang for my birthday and having it bagged up, my wife questioned the amont of water in the bag. She was told not to worry, fish need oxygen more than water! Maybe that can explain all of the Yellow Tangs we have flying around here in NM instead of birds! 8O

Actually NMreefer,
...the salesperson was correct in this case. Fish breath oxygen just like you do, they remove it from the water instead of the air like you do. This is why when you bag a fish, you put more air than water - YOU NEED OXYGEN TO ENTER THE WATER. If you fill the bag up with water, what happens when the fish uses up all the disolved oxygen?
D,oh! 8O

Make ya wonder huh?

A friend of mine calls me last night who has gotten worked up after seing pics of my reef and a friends reef has started spending quite a bit of money on his reef. He paid for all the initial set-up and knows nothing about reefkeeping. The friend we have in common had told his of how well his system and my system does with a DSB. So he went to the LFS where he shops (horrible shop BTW) and told them he wanted a DSB. They went to his house and set him up with refugium with 4" of Miracle Mud !! You guys know how expensive that stuff is... He is also having alot of problems with deaths... I asked him about his water parameters and he claims they told him that he only needed to worry about water parameters during the tanks cycle. 8O They have never even asked him to bring in water to test !!I know the store he goes to and I know the guys there are little bastards and will sell you anything to make a buck so I believe him...

well.. this was a few years ago when I was in my father's fish shop. There was this 2 guy that came in (not to buy stuff you can see from thier face) ask one of my father employee, 'do you know anyfish that will sleep with their eyes close?' one of them asked. I was listen at a side back then by the way.. then the employee answer 'well, I don't think so.no' the 2 guys start to laugh at the employee and say wrong! won't you know wales do?! ahahhahaha~! The conversation got the attention of other customer and they are all listening. then I go in and say.. nop. wales is not fish. I was quite young back then and so the 2 of them laugh even more. Then I say... they are mammals tat breath with lungs and they flip their tale vertically when swiming while fish have gills and flip their tale horizontally. everyone hold their laught at this point and this 2 guys stop to laugh immediately and walk out wihtout saying anything... when he is near the door, I then say..' my kindergarden teacher teached me that' then all the people laugh out loud. hahahahahhaa!!! :P
