That's if they were eaten. Not many fish fond of eating them because their bony outer skeleton. I have kept at least one type of boxfish for every tank I had. I've never have problem with toxin.

However, their mouth is very small making feeding them a difficult task. They are best adapted to a minimal flow tank (they don't like to swim too much), with great water quality. There can be no aggressive tankmates otherwise you will see the boxfish hide in the corner and eventually starve themselves.

Have you kept them with inverts?

I have difficulty keeping them with 1. crustaceans equal or smaller size as them, and 2. softbodied wiggling inverts (shrimp, pods, some worms, crabs, some snails.

I have not encountered any problem with corals and anemone, however. I have heard of boxfish munching on sponges, but I have never witness that in my care.

Yes, stupid mistakes had happened, although I'd hate to admit it.

Like I said, if you are looking to keep one, you should be prepared to provide its required environment (slow flow, hiding spaces, docile tankmates, no fast moving fish...etc), and right food (remember small mouth, right?).

Sorry to say, but they do release toxins when they die. We had a 55gal fish only tank many years ago. Had a boxfish (cutest little thing). Not sure why it died, but we came home one day and it was dead and everything else was dying. We had a dogface puffer that was a family favorite and it had puffed up and was stuck behind the powerhead gasping for breath. When it died we had to bury it in the backyard since it was way too big to flush. I'd have to encourage you to not get one. They are great fish and friendly, but do you really want to take the risk?

I don't think so, they lived harmoneously for over a year with no problems, and there was no evidence of foul play.

Throughout the time we had the tank set up with the fish, the dogface puffer only puffed up once when it was first brought home. We knew it wasn't healthy so we didn't do it on purpose. No one was at home when it happened, so I think it was just time for the fish to pass away. The box fish never puffed up, it lived a pretty slow relaxed life and never had any troubles.

I had a Long-horned Cowfish. He just died last month. The sweetest thing. Had him for 4 yrs and grew from 2" to 8". He loved frozen everything, ate very good and one day he was dying. It was tragic to watch because he was so big and personable. My kids were hysterical. I didn't let him go too long since i did not want him to suffer and infect the tank. I euthanized him in the freezer. It was awful thing to do and it was the first time I really cried over a 'fish' but he was a wonderful and absolutely no problem but would munch on the brightly colored corals, and the snails and chase after the shrimp.

Now that is a big loss. I almost picked up a Undulated Trigger to cycle my tank with. He was only 19 bucks. I was going to spend that much on Damsels or Mollies. I still might do it. They are extremely hardy animals and easy to get out of the tank.

I don't know how easy it is to extract a trigger from a hole once they've got their dorsal spine locked...

19 bucks for damsels wow. They are like 5$ a piece near me.
I would not recomend using damsels unless you want them for good. These guys are not easy to catch once LR is in the tank. Plus why not cycle the tank for a piece of un cooked sea food.

The tank is 100 gallons..the damsels were 6 for 30 bucks ....way to much! However I could get a Trigger for 19 bucks.
