Hi, I'm in Australia were Power comapcts / compact flourocents arent available, but 'Ive noticed philips have Compact Fluorescent Lamps
that come in 12W, 15W and 18W and the highest color tempreture color available is 'daylight' at 5000k. Would combining 2x18w5000k of these with 2x2'Normal Output flouro tubes (1x10000k, 1xactinic) prove useful for most soft corals and some lower light requiring LPS? (in a 2' 20gal, higher placement of corals used where possible) And if it the power compact lamps are thought to be actually useful, how aestethically pleasing would they be ?

Thanks

5000 is very yellow, if you used these with a normal attinic blue it might look good. i use (2) 175 watt MH lights with 2 normal flouresent attinic bulbs. i like the look a lot.

why not order your stuff online from the US..... It might be a little expensive but at least the spectrums are correct.

More than a little expensive, my friend. I have an Aussie friend for whom I sent a couple of issues of FAMA magazine and shipping just for that was over $20US.

I grew T. derasa clam and many softies under normal output fluoros for quite a few years. 5,000K is good, and I don't see why you can't do it.

However, I'll also point you towards http://www.wetwebmedia.com and look for Anthony Calfo's articles on lighting for the reef aquarium and acclimating animals to lighting. There's lots more info there, too.
