my LFS has a huge ritteri that the guy has had for about 4 years now. hes keeping it under a single 175w pendant. ....

.....my LFS has a huge one that hes had for like 10 years........
So how long had he have it? 4 or 10 years? Can you trust this LFS to tell the truth? Is it in his holding tank or his show tank?
It is unlikely that a any anemone can live for any lenght of time in and holding tank.
H. magnifica is the most demanding of anemones. They live in reefcrest and required similar enviroment in aquarium. This is a high light and high water movement. If they don't get this, they will move around and is the bringer of death for your corals, or obstruct your overflow, or get shred and kill by your PH.

sorry my mistake he told me 4 years. I just estimated 10 years the first time, then i actually asked him. It is in his show tank, its not for sale, he has a few tanks that he just displays stuff in. Its very big and beautiful.

The part about anemone auras was particularly helpful.

That was really helpful isn't it? Everybody have right to an opinion I guess, but that bit about auras is way beyond me.

James,
It seem like some of the threads your post linked to is not complete. Where is the rest of it?

here is what dr. ron has to say:
"Hi,

Light is seldom the problem for these animals, they are often found in relatively deep water. The problem in aquaria is appropriate very vigorous water movement that is not turbulent flow from a power head, and getting enough food all while keeping the water pure. They are fish predators and they eat a lot, and they seem to require quite pure water. Not a good set of specifications for the average reef tank.

I don't recommend them for the average reef keeper."

I think this is the case with most anemones, even hardier ones like BTAs...
some like serious lighting, some hide in the rockwork. I think that obviously ritteri require higher light levels than BTAs, but to evaluate their preference of light in terms of individual specimens is still a guessing game. I would think the optimal situation would be to introduce a healthy specimen into a system with as much lighting (and current) as possible, then let them find their place. I love the look of ritteri as well, but will probably never try one. I like to be able to enjoy my tank as well as maintain its inhabitants,(as a hobby), and it seems that an anemone of this size and level of husbandry would just leave me stressed out, instead of enjoying it's beauty, wondering if it was gonna move, if it was getting enough light, enough current, live or die slowly, etc... Sorry, just got me thinking about it...

Hi Minh,

How are you!?

Those links are from my search results, so they only return responses that have the word Ritteri in them.

Weird, eh?

Cheers
James

One should not take any one person's word as truth. From my multiple sources, H. magnifica live in the top of the reef (1-10 meter from the surface) This level have intense light and water motion indeed. Dr. Ron also indicated that these anemones do not divided asexually, which I know to be wrong. They devided three times in my tank over 16 months in my tank. I now have 4 clones of this one anemone and is running out of room.
As to the possiblity that I mis ID my anemone, there is no way. You can see the picture of my anemone from previous threads.

Minh, do you have any desire to part with your clones? I certainly couln't handle them, but I'm sure lots of people would want them.

I have two very good friend locally who wants two of the four. I wanted to keep two trying to get them to split again. (about 16 months between the first split and the next two)
