I am getting ready to upgrade from a 150 to a 180. My current 150 has a 2 year old sand bed, not sure you can call it DSB, as it is only 2-3 inches. I had planned to move this sand to the new tank and add more SD. Is this not a good idea? I will be cycling the new tank as long as needed. I will moving my existing 180lb of live rock plus adding and 100-150lb more of already cured live rock.

I didn't think this would be a problem until I read a couple recent posts. Anyone care to elaborate on what I can do and what to expect?

Thanks

hi.
Which particular post are you talking about here?

Anyway, When I upsize my tank, I add the new SD on the bottom, add saltwater, to cover the sand, then scoop over the old sand from the old tank, and go from there.

If it were me, I'd use mostly new substrate for the new tank and use just a little of the old sand (maybe 5-10% by volume) to see the new sand. Sand is a porous media that tends to trap all sorts of nasties over time, so it's not a bad idea to start as new as possible IMO.

i just moved a 70 into a 110 and did what Len said. If you chose to do that I would stick to the top layer of existing sand, and junk the rest.

Thanks for the replys. looks like I need to start calling HD's again to find some more SD!

If I have sand left over anyone is welcome to it.
