Anyone know of these having the 'Rio Problem', or is it just the big ones? Would you use one in your system for some extra circulation because you have it laying around from somewhere?

From everything I've seen, it's the Rio's that are equal or larger than a 1700 that seem to catastrophically fail.

I've had all sizes of Rio fail, but the larger ones tend to burn out more frequently. I've killed no less then 10 Rios in the last 10 years.

I have had 4 burn out on me personally, and have seen at least 20 instances from customers here in the shop. I'd avoid RIO pumps like the plague...

Peace,

i have used the smaller ones (800 and 600) for years and had no catastrophies. they are likely to jam up and getting them started is a pain but i haven't ever heard of the 800 down having the massive meltdown problems.

mine are all getting to be five or six years old now and are rapidly kicking the bucket one by one. i can't even tell why they won't work anymore i htink the impellers are just wore out.

They seem to be made out of cheap plastic as well...I had clear tubing on the outlet with a hose clamp (very light pressure) and the outlet collapsed pretty much (different pump from above)

The Rio 50 has a very small GPH I think its 64gph. I used one as a mixing pump for my kalk reactor but it crapped out after 2 months (using ESV Kalk too not Balls Pickling which I hear is coarser) I now use a MJ 400.

well i gues it boils down to you get what you pay for..well in my opinon.

rios are the cheaper pumps where i live, and the most widely stocked. i think its an evil cycle..people buy what the can get, and here its hard to find anything else. LFS stock the rios cause people buy them..and on and on and on.

i wish there was a huge nation LFS with all the badass stuff and gave good advice...in fact...RDO should start a chain of stores accross the nation

I don't have any Rios larger than a 600 but have yet to have one fail on me - some have been in use for about 2 years at least.

I have a pair of 50's I had in my nano and no complaints they do what they are supposed to.

Thanks. I have found another pump in a drawer. My intent was not to start an anti rio thread, but to find if people actually had problems with all rio's or just the big ones.

I have two rio 50's on my tank and have had zero probs with them. I personally like them. They have been running non stop on my tank for over a year now.

Thanks,
Shane
