They blow. I really wish they would work, because it is hard for me to run another power cable up there to run a sea swirl. After a while they start sticking and you will go nuts trying to clean them, bang them etc. to try and get them to keep oscillating. I have gone through several (heh I'm a slow learner), the total cost of which exceeds that of a sea swirl.

Mini and Len - what exactly causes them to fail - mineral deposits? What? I looked into these several times but they always seemed too good to be true for the money.

For my new tank (215) I am just going with 2 streams on opposite corners of the tank plus a borneman type surge bucket - I looked into seaswirls and ended up passing on em.

They don't mention it (for good reason) that Ocean Currents need to be serviced on a regular basis by completely disassembling it. You can send it in to O.C. to service, but it costs something like $35 twice a year. It's got A LOT of moving parts (gears and stuff), and we all know how reliable complex machines usually are ;) The Sea Swirl is a far simplier device.

Hey thanks guys I did a little leg work myself and found the same things your saying to be true. I spoke to the guy at aquatic eco and he said that they have problems when used with calcium in a system (so much for using them in a reef) his recommendation are the SCWD. The problem there is that I want movement like a Sea Swirl. As to the DIY project fortunatly I have beginnings of this and will probably go ahead and give it a try. Thanks again snowman
