I saw one on Euro-Reef's site. I have always wanted to set up a seahorse tanks and have researched them thoroughly, but never set up a tank.

I have an unused 46 gallon, built a sump and have an unfinished tank stand I plan on finishing.

What kind of lighting should I use? I am thinking VHO or PC. How many watts?

I want to go big on the skimmer, maybe a MyReef or simular Beckett style skimmer.

Anyone have experience with these tanks?

Thanks,
Mark

I am a member there.

I am not looking for any more seahorse info. I spent months at that site researching it.

What I am looking for is specific info on raising macroalgea in large quantities without raising nutrient levels to unacceptable levels. They love high nitrates, seahorses don't. How can I resolve this?

Also, what about lighting?

This is my seahorse tank at the shop :

These are pics of DanMHippo's seahorse tank (when it was set up) :

The lighting on my tank at the shop is 3x 95-watt VHO. The brightness of the tank helps the seahorses retain their color. I've since added more macroalgae to the front, and there is an orange-spot goby that roams the back of the tank to provide more waste for the algaes to grow. I feed the crap out of the tank, not only because the tank-bred seahorses go right after frozen shrimp, but the pod population needs enough sustenance to replenish faster than the grazing seahorses can deplete it.

I hope this helps...feel free to ask more questions...

Peace,

C.prolifera seems to do pretty well and grow relatively fast. Also you may want to look at Chaetomorpha sp. macroalgae as well (looks like a brillo pad type stuff). Both seem to soak up nutrients relatively quickly and the added bonus of Chaetomorpha is that it doesn't crash like other macros.

I have this rotating 60-gallon tank in my sunroom. Both Sargassum and ponies are very happy.
