While collecting glass shrimp for my cuttlefish in the long island sound, I picked up a few hermit crabs. I've gotton a bunch of nassarius snails but today I got some hermits! They have a black shell and white legs.

anybody have experience with them? I'm not putting then in my reef but just curious what they would do if I did?

I collected a few LI hermits about a year ago and I never put them in my tank since they appeared too aggressive and thought they might get too big and end up harrassing my fish and maybe knocking everything over. Just my .02 but I'm sure there are also different types of hermits "endemic" to certain parts of the island.

a local store by me suffolk county fish and reef sells glass shrimp 10 for a 1

wow, not a bad price
I work on the water so checking my DIY traps once a week is no big deal:thumbs:

lfsmarineguy, are you on the atlantic or sound side of LI? these guys also look too aggresive so I won't put them in the reef but I like their white legs so I'm keeping a couple in my other tanks.

Don't forget the sound is brackish water, its not pure ocean water and has a lower SG. Creatures living it may not be able to handle our water at a higher SG.

cb, good to know

craig, not in the traps but there are many stars in the sound. We usually see them in the fall when we're derigging all our stuff. The ones that come up in the gear are around 5"-6" big

There are 2 kinds of hermits in LI Sound. The little ones are hyper as anything, and in my experience are reef safe...they even eat cyano...however, as someone pointed out earlier, reef salinity is higher than LI Sound salinity...so they don't last long in a reef setup...as cuttlefish food, they should be fine, but in a reef they won't last more than a few weeks. Even in my brackish local tank they don't last long.....up to a few months, a year at most. The other LI Sound hermit is the flat-clawed, and they get very large...and would surely wreak havoc in a reef. I can't keep them in my local tank because they are too big for a 10 gal tank. Take care, Eric
