is it ok if i buy a tiny sailfin tang i saw at the store for my 29 gallon. it is only about 1 1/2 inch. the lfs say they will take it back for some credit when it gets too big. bad idea?
Why bother? Why not just stock you tank with fish that will live in the system long term? It's best to add fish as infrequently as possible, especially if you don't quarantine (which you should.)
It's best to stock your tank, then leave it alone as much as possible. Having said that, a very tiny tang will do fine for a period of time in that tank.
I've had a small yellow tang in a 12 gallon nano on my desk here at work for 2 weeks. He's been doing just fine. He's going home to the big tank today though, it was just a place to quarantine him for a while.
Cheers
Jim
All the above is true, but I have to admit I exchange fish fairly frequently at my LFS. No matter how much I research, there sometimes are unfavorable fish interactions. Tangs are big food pigs, and can be trapped usually. My trap is made out of a section of 4" pvc with an egg-crate door attached to a piece of monofilament. It takes a week or so for them to comfortably start eating out of it.
thanks guys. i was afraid i get flame like some other places. i will take your advice and ignore the tang. too bad because it is so cute at that size but oh well. i will just have to get a bigger tank, yay! i am looking at a 60 gallon that is on sale and might just buy it soon. if i do maybe i pick up the sailfin now and hold him tempory in my 29?
Fungia, I hate to say it but a 60 gallon is still to small for a sailfin, they really do get pretty big. I have one in a 155, and sometimes he acts "pent up."
LOL, well that is one of my better pics. This pic is the result of my finely developed technique involving taking photos over and over again in the hope I get one decent one.
