In a final, humiliating chapter of the Mr. 4000 saga, the once proud website, which boasted a huge one-of-a-kind reef tank and even a multi-forum reef-related BB, has officially ceased to exist.

I guess the cost of maintenance and ramification of a large body of water in the basement really killed it.

Apparently, the major problem was an insane amount of humidity was "eating" through the floor above the tank. As for humiliating... I respect anybody that attempts something on that scale. The next guy who tries a giant tank might not make the same mistake.

How many years did it take to damage his house? I remember Morgan Lidster of Inland Aquatics saying that he was going to have to replace the roof beams on his greenhouse for similar reasons.

The test of time is open book.

I don't think it took very long at all. IIRC he only had a foot or so clearance from the top of the tank to his ceiling. He had to be evaporating close to a hundred gallons per day!

Can anyone else picture their wives saying "I told you so"

I say "humiliating" because his website, riddled with hubris at its height, reflected the decline without saying a word about it (indicating humiliation).

After a while no new pictures emerged. Then the mr.4000 BB moved to a different hosting site, then disappeared together. Then these links popped up in the site about pictures of some 750 gal tank. (Whose? I dunno...) Not a word about the status of the 4000 gal tank in the Q & A, or anywhere else.

Finally, the site no longer exists. What became of the magnificent 4000 gal tank? We may only know from myth & folklore... (Personally, I heard the tank can still be seen today, roaming around the Bavarian forests, wowing the occasional lone woodsman.)

You gotta think a guy that put that much time and moola into a project of that magnatude is gonna be a *little* depressed at its failure. SO maybe he just got sick and tired of "I told you so", or distraught at the sight of the empty tank. (what do you do with an empty tank that size? a raquettball court?)

Mr. 4000's tank was very large and with in 2 year (i believe i read) it started doing major damage to his house due to the evap. that the tank was putting off. I think it was somewere between 20-50g a day. I dont know about you but that would cause me to take it down. When he set up the system he didnt take into count all the evap that the system would end up going threw daily. So it isnt humiliating. It just didnt work out the way he wanted. As far as the 750 that was posted on his site was his as well if i remember correctly. Personally i couldnt imagine doing the upkeep on either of those systems let alone what it cost him every month just to run it.

My hat goes off to Mr. 4000. He done a great job on that setup. Who knows maybe one day he can fix the problems that he had and set it up again.

I understand the distinction you are making MG. I just feel bad for the guy. Let's face it, most of us here dream of tanks that big.

Imagine:

4000 gallons IO mix = $1000
10% water change = $100
4000 gallons RO/Di from the grocery store= $2400 (800 5 gallon jugs)

My 75GPD RO/DI would take 53 days and change to fill it up. Estimate 60GPD evap = 266 days. 8O

When I started out in the hobby, I thought John Rice was going to be the best resource ever. He even replied to me once I think.

I think if people lose touch that easily, then they weren't meant for the hobby. He could still go in the sump as a has-been reefer tho.... :? :P

OK, I'll say it:
I have no problem being critical of his tank. Putting that much water in your house without planning ahead is just stupid in the extreme. I mean come on, would you put a giant hot tub or a 4000 gallon pond in your house without planning for the effects of all that evaporation?
