Hi, I'm not sure what to make of this whole "are DSBs bad or good" virus thats been going around, so I propose an official survey. The first questions that I can think of are:

How big is your tank?
How long has it been set up?
How deep is your sand bed?
What kind of sand did you use? (100% aragonite, 100% "true live", Southdown, etc.)
Did you ever "seed" you sand bed with a kit similar to those from ipsf, inland aquaticts, etc?
Have you had a significant outbreaks of ___ in the last 6 months?
... hair algae?
... bryopsis?
... cyano?
... diatoms?
Have you had trouble keeping down your...
... nitrates?
... phosphate?
Are you using any other reef additives? (Please specify which ones)
Do you have any other sand shifting critters in your tank? (chocolate chip star, serpent star, clams, nessarius snails, etc.)
How much and how often do you feed your tank?
Have you ever removed a DSB from a tank because of algae or other problems?
How old was the tank at the time?
Did the problems go away after the removal?

I'm sure we can come up with a comprehensive set of questions that could really find out how many people are having real "DSB Crashes" and all the horrible things we've been hearing about.

According to Dr. Ron, people who have DSB crashes are not managing thier DSB correctly, and lack a full understanding of what it does.
I asked him about this on his forum recently, because with all the hoopla going on, I was starting to second guess myself. So played devils advocate a little bit and asked him about it.
There is a contigent of people who say "you can't turn something into nothing" so it must stay in your sandbed. Well, as pointed out in the thread, gas isn't "nothing" and gas is partialy what organic matter is converted into via the DSB. I knew this of course, as this is part of the basic nitrogen cycle. It's not the whole story though...
Here is that thread.

Hope this helps. :)
