Algae Growth

I have a relatively new tank (only about 10 weeks old) and am wondering about algae growth. I have a brown algae that is growing rapidly. I clean the glass surface and in a couple days the algae is so thick I can't see in the tank. I have a ro/di unit that is brand new that I have been using. I also have a bunch of snails in there but they don't stand a chance at keeping up. Is this algae normal? Will this continue forever?

Yes.

No. For the first 6 months to a year you will likely see several types of algae come and go.

How long they stay and how bad they get will have a lot to do with your husbandry techniques, your setup, bioload, feeding regimen, etc.

That is SO simplified, yet, too true. Chances are you've got a diatomaceous bloom happening. Small, frequent water changes (assuming that water is nitrate/phosphate free) are going to be the ticket for now. Also, a really kickass skimmer!

If you don't have much in the tank, cut your feeding way down to limit nutrient input. Also, for tanks this age, you shouldn't be adding any additives.
