I have a 180 FOWLR currently, a few Crabs and Snails. I am wondering if I can add copper directly to the tank, I know this is not a good practice, and remove all crabs and snails.

After a few weeks do some massive water changes and utiliize NovAqua to remove "toxic metals" to remove the copper out of the water without any long term affect?

Is there a chance this could work? I am trying to do something without having to tear the whole tank down to get the fish out.

My first option I have a UV sterilizer on the way, I have heard that this may help with future outbreaks if the fish are healthy enough to get over whatever they have. Before anyone says it, they were quarentined for 15 days w/cupramine by seachem at .4ppm. This is where I challenge that parasites don't exist in tanks already.

Hey moreey

don't dose the copper(cupramine) in any tank you wish to one day put invertebrates in at all.period!

The source of your problem needs to be found.

Give us some info on how old your tank and water param. These are very important.

If you can get them out and then in a quarantine tank; this is the best option.
This is where I challenge that parasites don't exist in tanks already.

No parasites don't exist in tanks without water or that are empty. But as soon as we put live rock(that is wet) or a little of the water from when adding the fish, boom their there.

If you have no chance of removing the fish for quarantine(at the LFS or ho e) then try to remove all invertebrates and drop the salt level down to 1.018SG for 4 weeks. That means 4 weeks at 1.018.

You have to do this correctly and accurately otherwise the losses of the fish are possible. with a refractometer etc.

PS the uv sterilizer will be of little help against carptokaryon because it will only kill the planktonic stage of them, not the host parasite or those in the sand.

One more thing I forgot to mention.

The use of garlic oil is of great use in the fight against cryptokaryon.

Try soaking the in a bit of the oil everyday before feeding.

i am thinking that the emperor and queen just didn't get along. Water parameters:
Ph 8.2
Salinity 1.023
Nitrate 0
nitrite 0
ammonia 0
calcium 450
KH 9
temp 80

i am not sure what else could be the problem. As far as parasites go, I keep reading that they don't exist in the system until you add them! Fish are the only way to do this??

The tank was up for almost a year before any fish were added. There was just live rock, crabs and snails.

If the tank was running for a year without fish then yes there would not be any cryptokaryon in there.

If the fish are fighting constantly then yes this could lead to illness in one of them or both/all.

If the illness really is cryptokaryon(white spot) try the gralic, sinking the salinity will help and increasing the temperature, which speeds up the lifecycle of cryptokaryon, over four weeks. This always seems to help me on my quarantine tank.

Before sinking the salinity be sure to remove all inverts.(crabs, snails etc.) they don't handle it well.

Turning off the lights also helps. But this alone is no cure.

good luck

I have removed the emperor back to the hospital tank, he has almost completly lost all his color. I am using a product called Rid Ich that was suggested for ich and fungal diseases. Do you think he's to far gone? Is there anything else I should be trying?

moreey,

Let the Rid ich work for a while and see how it is doing.
The Rid ich should do the trick but it depends on far progressed the infection is.

You could try what I always leave as a last resort is the freshwater dip. If he's not eating, in the hospital tank and still progressively worsening then use the dip.

Freshwater dips are done with water of the same pH and temp. of the tank he is in and not longer then 2 minutes.
Don't forget to oxygenate the water with an airstone before and during.

But this is only if you feel he is not getting better and not eating.

Try to keep him eating and also soaking the food first in the garlic oil.

good luck
Brian

PS Are the other till in the main tank fine?

If you have a fish in the hospital tank, use copper in the hospital tank. IMO/E rid ich or kick ich don't work.

For more information, you can do a search here for rid ich or kick ich.

And you haven't told us if the fish have ich or not.
