There is a gentelman that is selling a 210g custom glass tank for $550. 18" tall (tank only) 28" deep 8' long. says that it is a shallow tank for a reef (hence custom) Comes with stand/hood/tank and some lights (4x110watt) What other questions would be appropriate to ask and is this a reasonable price? I would be getting the tank to upgrade from a 55g acrylic reef (this wuold then be transplanted to the sump obviously). PLus always had acrylic anything negative i should consider with glass besides the weight?

The two things I would be most concerned with a used tank are :

1-How scratched up is it? I bought a used glass tank and got it home, once it was set up I came to see that it was seriously scratched. Like someone regularly got a bunch of sand under the algae magnet and just scratched the snot out of it. I saw it empty when I bought it and they were not so apparent as when it was filled and had lights on, but if I would have looked closely I could have seen the scratches before I bought it. Sigh, lesson learned I guess.

2-Ask him if he ever dosed copper in it. Probably hasn't since it's a custom reef tank, but always good to ask.

Sounds like a reasonable price to me. I don't know how much it costs to have something like that made, but it sounds like a cool looking tank.

Amanda,

Wow...That sounds like a great deal if the tank is in good condition. Check for scratches since you will not be getting scratches out of a glass tank. Also, ask about leaks. If he's got it set up currently, then you can tell for yourself. If not, you want to make sure the seams are in good condition. Ask him if he had the tank leveled properly when it was set up. Tanks that are not leveled properly can sometimes develop problems with seams. If possible, ask him if he can partially fill it to check for leaks.

If all is well, it sounds like a great tank at a great price.

Dont let the copper discourage you. Even if he didn't dose copper i would rinse it with a mild bleach/warm water solution. This would eradicate any residue and helps w/ algae removal. just rinse it well w/ cool dechlorinated water, and let it sit in the sun. This will be SURE to get rid of any chlorine left over from the bleach. The scratches that may or may not be there should be your major concern as well as if the thing leaks or not...good luck!
