I saw a beautiful coral which I was told is a "Meat Coral". It is pinkish red with long flowing branches. Does anyone know the scientific name so I can add it to my aquarium?
Glenn - the who corals I see most often offered as 'meat' corals are lobophyllia and cyanaria. Do a google image search on those but they are not branching as far as I know.
Meat coral is usually used to describe Lobophyllias. The "flowing branches" description also kinda throws me for a loop though. Perhaps it was misnamed at the store?
candy coral would be caulastrea - very hardy and easy to keep IME , does well in moderate light. Again though since many retailers and wholesalers don't use latin names it's hard to say 100%. Caulastrea is not branching per se but does have a columnar aggregation type of growth - I guess some specimens can branch too but I don't see them as often.
I looked up caulastrea in My corals of the World by JEN Veron and unfortunately it was a no go. I guess that her names were all wrong. I went thru 1500 pages in the three volumes and could not find anything close. Can you think of anything Pinkish that looks like it has a leather base and fairly long flowing branches ??
