My 75gal has 200lbs of Caribbean Aragonite to which I added a package deal from IPSF. I also took some old nylon stockings and scooped some crushed coral from my 29gal. Pokes holes in it and placed them in the 75gal for several weeks to help let the bristleworms out. I didn't add the package from ISPF till a few months after starting the tank. When I removed the stockings I ran the coral thru a sieve to make sure I got all the live critters I could see out.

So I didn't collect my own, but with additions of rubble and crud from my LFS tanks when I built rubble piles to enhance pod production for my scooter blenny, I think I did a fair job.

I collected some from the Atlantic Ocean in the Florida Keys. I bought some from the LFS. I got some from serveral different reefers as well.

I didn't see that option in the poll.

I bought bristle worms and brittle stars from greg hiller. (great guy to deal with btw.) And I let my live rock provide the bacteria.

Are there online places that sell the real deal (staight from the ocean)?

yes.

that is what i have been looking into.

my impression from discussions here (someone correct me if i heard wrong) is that a DSB will not work corectly without getting the real deal.

there supposedly are critters that would be found in the true live sand that would not hitch hike on live rock.

i have seen quite a few places sell fiji live sand.

You only need to seed your sandbed with real stuff or from a friends tank. It may mature faster if you use more real than dry.

I added 20 pounds of fresh LS in my 75. Later I increased the depth. I took fresh collected LS from the keys and put in a spare 20. I put southdown on top of it. The bugs migrated up though the sand. Then I added the southdown to the tank. I put the fresh stuff in my fuge.

i thought it would look this way.
most people don't buy the sand thus it isn't as readily available.
God knows i never did.
i wonder how many sand beds would work better if they added some real stuff? anyone gone a while without and then add?

I bought "live" sand from a reputable source, however it didn't come from the ocean. He cultured it from live rock and various added critters. I didn't see that option so I didn't vote... :P

I puchased some LS from of the Florida aquaculture companies - Gulfview. http://www.gulf-view.com/ The sand was right from the gulf. It was a bit coarse to truly be called sand. It didn't seem to contain much life (maybe a few pods and worms). It did contain spores of many macroalgaes.

Dr. Ron has stated that most critters are ground upin the sand during shipping. I'd have to concur. I think the critter kits that are shipped without sand might be a better way to establish a sandbed.

how does he figure that "most" are.

i mean the amount of total life in the sand is far greater than what can be visually inspected for damage, right?

Dr. Ron is pretty fond of doing actual counts using his disecting microscope, so I figure that Dr. Ron knows what he is talking about.

Also, I'm pretty fond of looking at samples under a 10x hand lense. I simply didn't see much other than ground up worms in the sand.
