i guess my point is that one would need to buy the sand in order to obtain the meiofauna that is contained within it.
whether most of them are ground up or not still won't make a deciding factor for me because i highly doubt you will find these animals in a detritivore kit.
the kits i have seen are mainly comprised of animals that could be found on most LR and i have yet to see the microscopic mentioned in the ads for these kits.

I guess I've always figured that ample amounts of meio-, and microfauna are hidden away in reasonable numbers on good live rock. I wonder just how many unique types of critters one would get in LS that are not already hitch-hiking on the LR?

But then again that is the crux of your original question, isn't it?

Cheers,

i have been told by very knowledgable folks here on RDO that LS houses species of meiofauna that cannot transport on rock. how valid a statement that is, i can only rely on those that have made it.
Dr. Shimek is a very knowledgable man in this hobby, much more than i will ever be. however his ideals on DSB keeping have lost weight with me as of late. not because i don't want to hear his views but because he makes no sound reasoning for his rapidly changing views.
it seems to be sparked by his own tank failure which makes me wonder about his objectivity.

and yes...you have tagged the crux.

The way I did it isn't up there, at least not the way I interpreted it. I started with dry sand and bought detritivore kits from IPSF, GARF and IA. I also got clean-up crew from PA.
