Im just curious to what people use in their tanks for filtration, ie sumps, fuges, and combos of them.. And especially for the smaller tanks 30 and below...
On my 120 gallon tank, I use only a Euroreef CS6-2 as my filter. It sits in a baffled 30 gallon sump. Once in a while, I'll run Polyfilters and activated carbon (both used passively) to clear up the water.
On my smaller tanks, I usually run a hang-on skimmer such as the Remora. Same idea as my larger tanks, just scaled down.
On my old 29g I used a BakPak 2r and about 30lbs of LR with a 3.5" DSB. I had a hang-on Pequin with the Bio-wheel removed without any cartridges. I would run carbon about 24 hrs. during the off week of my biweekly H2O changes. The rest of the time the hang-on was just additional circ.
I ran the above setup for about 4 yrs with great results. The secret to small tanks is water changes and finding that "sweet-spot" with the bio-load. Mine was 3 small fish (Perc, Blennie, Chromis....I did at one time have a Coral Beauty and perc that worked well too). Anything more would send my nitrates through the roof.
On my new 90g setup I am constructing now, I'll be using a DIY MACO course Beckett Skimmer at 28". I'm planning on about 100lbs of LR and a 3.5-4" DSB. I am constructing a fuge at the moment that I plan on having about 10lbs of LR and Macro Algae. All equipment will be in the old 29g used as a sump.
Thanx for the feed back guys...the reason i ask is, that i have a 20gal tank w/ protein skimmmer and run a tetratec pf150 on it... i plan on going to a fuge and just using that...Seems like no one uses Power Filters...??? I imagine the tetratec im running is fine, i was just curious to what everyone else was doing also...
