I was rearranging a bit of rock to get a peice of food I had dropped for my bta and I went to move my brittle star and part of one of his limbs snapped off in my hand. Now I know that it will grow back like a lizard tail but something else intrigues me. The part that snapped off is still moving around and this happened over a day ago 8O. I was wondering how much of a brittle stars leg you have to break off to grow a whole new star????

Not sure, although some stars (I have no idea about brittles), if a leg does break off, it can become a new star.

It's moving because of nerve signals still firing. The same reason humans can twitch after death. I do believe that in nature, it would grow into a new star. No promises about captive stars, though. I hope he will grow into two. They have amazing regenerative powers. Let us know what happens!

Then it may be that a portion of the central disk actually came off with it. If such is the case, and water quality allows, it should grow into another sea star.

The part I pulled off is about maybe and inch long and the entire leg is probably 6 -7 inches long so i didnt pull of the central disk unless some of the disk in located in the outer reaches of the leg. Weird still

I have a green brittle star that I pulled about an inch of his leg off (on accident). The piece I pulled off moved for two weeks every time I fed. It would go nuts. I think it would have grown a new star but unfortunately a big hermit crab found it and ate it. The star has since grown his leg back and is doing quite well. This thing has legs that are almost a foot long. Have always wanted to see if a piece of leg would grow a new star. Just can’t bring myself to pull off part of a leg. Guess I will never know.

You should get a small glass and put it at the bottom of the tank and put the leg in there to see how long it will live and if it is possible to grow a new star. Quite interesting.

ok its still moving around and now it looks as if the insides are growing out. Its a brown color outside and then the inside is white and I dont remeber it sticking out when I pulled it off. Looks like its regenerating. Crazy!!! 8O I know my water parameters are ok but not stellar does this mean my water is better than I thought??

Either that, or you have made an unfortunate purchase of THE ALIEN! (Cut scene to supaboy, just having eaten his first dinner since the encounter...) 8O

that's really gross, sea.

hey, supa - you'll have to keep us posted on how the limb (can i say that?) does. it would be really neat to witness if it actually does regenerate into a new star. :D

Dum Dum DUm ......... THE LIMB AHHHHHHH

Here it is guys it looks a bit longer than when I broke it off. Still wiggles and curls up when I touch it. Judge it for yourself. I got it at Aquatic warehouse so if you wanna go get an alien you can go there.
