I've had my Zebra eel for about 3 months now. Currently his diet consists of:

Tiger Shrimp from the Market
Squid
Krill
Gamma Fish
and every now and then a live cray fish

I feed him about 2 times a week, usually 1 tiger shrimp, or a few chunks of squid, or a few pieces of krill, or a few pieces of gamma fish, or a couple cray fish.

How much should I be feeding him? Since he is rather large I think I may be underfeeding him.

What do you guys think?

I feed mine, about the same exact size actually, 5-6 tiger prawns and one whole squid a week. He won't touch fish meat of any kind I've tried--red snapper, swordfish, tuna...

Eels can go a real long time without eating, so I wouldn't worry too much. A couple times a week is probably fine.

I may get some heat for this, but I feed mine 1 large or 2 small live crayfish once every week or two. I have had mine for almost 14years now and this schedule seems to work fine for him. I know when he gets hungry as he starts to get very active and curious. Other wise he just "chills" behind the rocks and peeks his head outevery now and then.

Mine will only eat shrimp, crayfish and an abolone once.

Good luck with yours as he is my favorite and watch out as they can get in the overflows or even find their way out of a small hole on the top of the tank if you have any.

I think your diet and schedule is great, Jason. Long time no see. Glad to see you finally settled on the Zebra, too. They're great fish, aren't they?

Hey Seamaiden..wow you racked up some serious posts! Yes I like my Zebra, but he does hide more then the other eels I have had. However I think it's because my Sohal tang is a big bully and the Zebra is a girly girl.

The Zebra is a very friendly eel. Doesn't bother anyone. My two cleaner shrimp are always following him around cleaning out his mouth. He gets aggresive whenever there is food in the water, but I have never seem him snap at a fish or anything else in the tank that wasn't food. He does however grab my feeding stick and pulls my arm into the tank since he is so strong.

As always, thanks for the advice.

Abalone? Abalone? Man, you are rich!

I fed mine frozen oyster, shrimp, small octopus, squid from Asian markets. But the majority of his diet is still the silversides.

Man........14 years is impressive.......... I wonder if you got a pic of it too?

Mine bit his feeding stick--a 1/2" thick solid wooden dowel--in two with his jaws. Watch those fingers!
