Hi,
I bought two pink tipped anemones the other day and was about to buy a nice maroon clown when the pet store guy told me that he thinks I bought a type that kills clowns. I don't know what kind it is because the place I bought didn't mark it and I didn't ask.
I thought all clowns had a protective layer that made it possible for them to enter into anemones. Is it possible that the anemone I bought is dangerous even to clownfish?

Thanks
Jay

Not all anenomes are hosts to clownfish, some have really strong stinging cells. Bulb anenomes work really well with clownfishes from what I know. My blacksaddle clown uses my alvopora as a host :lol:

I'm just starting this anemone thing too.

There are lots that can not be hosts. LTAs and BTAs and a few others are good.

Nice rule of thumb: Cheap= Bad.

BTA= Bubble Tip Anemone (best choice for those inexperienced, but still, anemones on the whole are difficult)
LTA = Long Tentacle Anemone

I will suggest with great vehemence that anyone considering anemones PLEASE do much research, as the desirable species have truly dismal survival rates in home aquaria, especially for beginners.

Ditto to what SM said.

By pink-tipped, I'm guesing that they are Condylactis anemones, which are an atlantic species. Since there aren't any clownfish that live in the atlantic, it is not a natural host. However, these are probably the hardiest anemones. Hope this helps! :D

FishFan and Seamaiden are both correct.

I thought I had everything tight. Leathers, zoos, pom poms, sponges, LPSs, even SPSs... I had gone 8 months without so much as killing a snail. So, I tried an LTA. Put some research into it too, a few books and every article on the topic in the past year+. Seems I was alowing too much fluctuation in the tank, not feeding correctly, the pepermint shrimp must have sensed a weekness and started picking... it all went downhill fast. Lucky for me I pulled him before the meltdown, known to wipe out a tank.

Take great care. These things are not easy.

Condys are known for eating clowns,however, some clowns are able to cope. I've had BTAs and now host a LTA and it seems that there are many things that factor in to success or failure. Temp...feeding....light....current...collection....holding tanks....predators....other inhabitants....S.G.....etc. You do it all right and any one of these may squash your success. It's a matter of knowing your anemone's health. After some time I could tell when they weren't happy.

I would suggest some more research in the future purchases.
