my eel just bit me

i was lucky, he just managed to graze the tip of my right ring finger w/mebbe one tooth...
gave me nice little gash about 1/4" deep, next to the nail-and my pinky went numb for a few hrs-bled like crazy, too(and i usually clot quite quickly)
this particular eel does have a thing for fingers, though-it will actually come up out of the water to chase your hand even when wiping down the glass canopy :lol:
prolly coulda used a stitch, but didn't bother-went back to workin on tanks later that day
took a few weeks for it to heal up, and not even a scar to show off :lol:
fwiw-i think a good quick rinse w/peroxide is all you'll prolly need, at the most :wink:
i got tons of cuts/scratches at work, and had my hands all the time in tanks, both f/w, and s/w, i usually just place my hand(s) in the tanks w/cleaner shrimp, and let 'em peck out all the dead tissue, and i believe the s/w is mildly astringent, and even partially antiseptic(though there are prolly plenty of bacteria there-hehe)
most cuts that i frequently place in s/w tanks seem to heal faster than those i don't, though 8O

I have come to the conclusion (after having been nailed myself, but only by snowflakes), that there might be an anti-clotting agent in their saliva (assuming they have such).

i agree with you SM. as this was a very very very very very minor cut. and it bled for a long time. it looks ok today..almost not visible. i was astonished...i wiped it off and thought nothing of it then 10 minutes later my finger was covered in blood..for the next hour. crazy!!! wow! nuts! crazy.! AHH!!!

You're right on the bacteria in the s/w, at least the kind that would hurt us. very different species with very different disease causing mechanisms.
F/w, however, has all kinds of nasties it it.
Cleaner shrimp on humans....hmmmm. Haven't heard THAT use for them, yet!

heh-put your hand in a tank w/some lysmata grabhami in it, and watch what happens :wink:
they will wander all over your hands/fingers, and start pickin all the dead skin/cuticle material off-it kinda tickles, too :wink:
btw- it's a great way to catch 'em for customers, i just let 'em ride on my hand, and slowly move my hand over a collection cup, placed in the tank, under water-absolutely stress free, too

I've never met a Zebra Moray I didn't like, and more than a few that were quite personable (one that was practically like a dog it wanted so much attention). I cannot say the same about snowflakes, and I've been nailed by them too many times to ever feel comfortable around them, whether or not there's food involved. Actually, come to think of it, I've never been bitten by any other eel of the moray family except snowflakes. :|
Can't remember who said morays on the whole tend to be very near-sighted, this seems to be very true, from what I've read and experienced.
