Hi all,
Does anyone here have some quality photos of fish with ich that you would like to see published? I could use some good photos to complement a series of articles about ich that I just finished. Close ups of single specimens are preferred. If the photos are something that I think that the publisher will like then I will put you in direct contact with them. You can work out any details with the publisher. I appreciate all offers, but the final decision about what will be published is up to the editor. If you are interested, please include your email address in the post so I know how to contact you.
Thanks,
Terry B

"I will put you in direct contact with them. You can work out any details with the publisher." This should be simple enough for anyone.

Terry,

What will the publisher pay per picture that accompanies an article? You should be able to find out this basic information since you have a relationship with this publisher. Why put the onus on many potential contributors to contact the publisher (whom you don’t even mention)? Does this publisher even pay for photographs inside articles? Let's not go down this road again. Why not be upfront with everyone?

As an example, I write for Fancy Publications and they pay $50 for each picture that accompanies my article in their Marine and Reef Annual issue (due out in November, BTW). If I were to borrow someone's photographs to accompany my article, I can tell that person that they will receive $50 for each picture used in the publication. I can’t guarantee that the photographs will be used though because I don’t have editorial control.

I don’t understand why you continue to be so cryptic about this. You want to borrow photos to be used in a commercial publication for an article that you will be paid for, but you don't want to be involved and won't commit to any remuneration for photos that accompany your article.

Greg,
If you send in a picture to a magazine (either on-line or print), should they include your name if they use the photo in publication?

Absolutely! The photograher's name is typically printed somewhere around the perimeter of the picture. If all the photographs that accompany an article were done by the author, they sometimes just make the blanket statement: "text and photos by author."

That's how we do it for Advanced Aquarist.

I suppose what the publisher will pay varies with the photo and how it is used. I don’t want to serve as a go between. I put photographers in direct contact with the publisher and the publisher pays them directly and not through me. It seems to me that the publishers and the photographers that I have been associated with have been satisfied with this arrangement.
How the articles will be used and who will publish this particular series has not yet been set in stone. However, I can tell you that the first two installments have been sent to Advanced Aquarist Online Magazine. They have already used two photos by Ryan Detzel that were published in the September issue in my article. I was the one that put Ryan and the editor in contact with one another. You might note that Ryan is also the photographer for the cover photo in the October issue of the magazine. I have no idea what the arrangement is between Ryan and Advanced Aquarist that is between them. However, I have sent an email asking the publisher what photographers can expect for future reference.
