I am seriously considering this skimmer for my 50 gallon. I replacing the bio wheel filter. I have a serious cash flow problem so I don't have alot of money to put into this tank.

I'd opt for the AquaC Remora Pro. I had the BakPak II on a 38 gal tank and had to do the airstone mod to it to make it function anywhere close to what I wanted out of it. The PM HOT1 is also supposed to be pretty good too.

You have to keep the air venturi clean on the HOT1. It likes to buildup a salt crust.

My BP2 works well on my 38 and I haven't done any mods. It nearly fills the collection cup completely in a weeks time. Any more skimate than that would sorta be a pain since I don't want to empty the cup any more than that.

I,ve been using the bak pak 2 for about 3 years with great sucess on my 20g reef. The only problem I'm having is finding parts for them in stores, as i managed to lose a couple of small parts durring a move or two. I ended up ordering them direct but it is very expensive with duty, freight ect.. and being in Canada. Other wise geat skimmer so far.
I havent heard of the air stone method please explain..

Have used the BakPak 2R, PM HOT-1, and the Aqua C Remora Pro with Mag3. The Aqua C blows the others away by far. The BakPak 2R works OK with the airstone modification but the Aqua C pulls out at least 200% more junk than a modified BakPak will. The PM HOT-1 will require constant fiddling and WILL overflow at some point  . Well made but a PITA. The Aqua C is plug and play AND set and forget (except to empty the collection cup). Excellent product :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D . I have a 42 gallon hex.

Welcome to ROD, gsanders!

I agree with your general accessment of the three HOB skimmers. One thing that I would like to add is that if you use the RemoraPro with calcium reactor, you will need to make sure the inject plug is turned periodically. 'Cause one day, when you need to access to clean the injector in the RemoraPro, you will found it to be totally locked

Thanks for the welcome and the excellent tip about the injector. I couldn't be more pleased with a product than the Aqua C Remora Pro. Excellent, excellent, excellent! :D

my only concern is that the bakpak2 may be undersized for your 50g. i have it on a 7g and it rocks....no mods.

I used to have a CPR Bakpak2 on my 55 gallon reef tank. Worked really good AS LONG you clean the powerhead RELIGIOUSLY!.

I now have an AquaC urchin (in-sump) and it works just about as well as my bakpak did but I dont have to battle the micro bubbles now :D

Had a BP2R on a 29g for about 2 yrs and it worked well. I would recommend it as a inexpensive skimmer.

They now make a dual BP that might be worth checking out as well. Not sure of the price though.
