bta or not?
I have a hunch that these guys are not good. two of them came attached in the inner braches of the trumpet coral. (hard to get to). i attempted to scrape one off. the next day there was four. they have stayed on coral until two days ago when I discovered one on my lr. i got syringe and injected a moderately strong kalk solution in its mouth. that put it down for a day. any ideas?
is the sponge bad?

Those are majanos. That's why you thought they might be BTA's since the tentacles don't taper like aiptasia. I haven't run across them before, but some say that Joe's Juice will take 'em out.

True they are not the same, but extremely closely related.

I have heard good things about Joes Juice.

Thanks for a quick reply. are these things bad? I still have these things pretty well comfined. I don"t like the way the one multiplied. . maybe a staight liquid calcium dose. I just don"t want to make more trying to get rid of them. but thanks for the new name to work with.

Well I have to differ with everyone. :?
Without a closeup it's difficult to say as A. majano has swollen tips and with these pics I don't see this. At the moment I agree this is not a good hitchhiker but I would say this is Aiptasia.

Kalk injections might work but you only half the time. Why waste your time? If only 1 aptasia/majano makes it then they will multiply like rabbits and you will be back at square one.

I used the juice and it worked as promised. I did have shrimp deaths right after but was unable to determine there cause of deaths. So I say go for the juice, especially if you don't have shrimp.

Side note, unfortunately Joe doesn;t disclose the ingredients wich is a bad thing. How do you know what you are adding to your tank? Either way it worked for me...

Actually if it is A. majano Kalk injections will not work at all, these things will just laugh at you. :D
Terry Siegel and I both have had major battles with A. majano in the past and the only way to kill them is to manually remove them from the rock by prying them off at the base or investing in a Racoon Butterfly ( either C. lunula or C. fasciatus ) but unfortunately they are not reef safe.
I'm not familiar with Joe's Juice but if it's a kalk type solution I'd be highly doubtful of it's effectiveness on A. majano.

P.S. I had approximately 2000 in one tank.

I have gotten rid of all the aptasia I have had in the past with Kalk injections. I just mix it real thick with a small amount of tap water and cover the anemone with it. It lays there like paste if its thick enough. I have never had a problem after this method was used or return of the anemone. It only doesnt work for aptasia if you don't do it right. If there are very few small aptasia peps will eat them.

Would any butterfly eat the majano and not the coral? Copperbands perhaps?

That's better. While it is genus: Anemonia it doesn't look like A. majano. I'm off to work now, when I get back I'll do some more research on this.
There are 10 identified species of Anemonia. There's alot of pics of A. majano on the Internet that are missidentified.
I'm curious on whether Joe's Juice works on these and I'm still very doubtful it would work on A. majano.

here is an excerpt of Aquarium Fish Magazine June 2004 issue regarding Anemonia majano:

...As you can probably tell, these anemones will be difficult to remove. You can also try techniques that work on Aiptasia, such as injecting with a saturated calcium chloride solution or placing a slurry of concentrated calcium hydroxide on top of the anemones. You can also injuect muriatic acid, but only a few anemones at a time can be treated. This is because of the effect of the acid on pH and alkalinity. The anemones can usually be siphoned out a short time after injecting them. Remember that you must wear gloves and goggles when handling the acid. The peppermint shrimp (Lysmata wurdemani) will also feed on Anemonia majano, but it will do so slowly. If you have a large number of anemones, you will need a lot of shrimp to keep them under control.

I was able to get rid of my nuisance anemone problem by hitting them with hot water from a syringe. By hot I mean I boiled water, loaded the syringe, and squirted the pests. When the anemones contracted and tried to hide in a hole I would put the tip of the syringe against the hole and keep squirting.

Most died from the first shot. There were a couple that survived and had to be blasted again.

I did end up with several bleached spots on my rock but they recovered quickly.

Your mileage may vary but it worked for me. :)
