I would have to use RO water, the crap that comes out of the faucet leaves streaks and stuff, looks like crap. I might try the vinegar diluted w/ water and see what happens.
I use tape, and I put a strip of tape along the entire top length of the tank. That way water can't splash over the top and get between the backing and glass.
FWIW, you should NEVER use windex on acrylic. I use it on glass occasionally though.
Why not just paint your tank with Tremclad or similar? After fiddling with backgrounds and tape for years I eventually decided to paint my new sw tank. Result is way better IMO than paper or film.
