Hello,

for my second 75 gal reef aquarium (previously was a fish only set-up), I removed all old sand/decoration (which was copper treated 10 years ago), changed most of water, installed 80 pounds red sea live rock this summer.

As green filementous algae began to growth a few weeks after, I put a ursin (Echinotrix calamaris) in october. It was fine and ate well until two weeks ago where it suddently go into a crevice and stopped moving. Spines are not depressed, just it don't move or eat, and anus is not prominent anymore.

Density is 1.023, temperature 26°C (79°F), altough I had a heater problem and temperature was a bit lower at 23°C (73°F) for about 2 weeks. I use kalkwasser to compense evaporation. There is no nitrate/phosphate/silicate. There is a good water circulation (4 pumps, about 1400 gal/hour).

Does someone have an idea ? Sick, ate toxic algae, parasitic,... ?

Try to pluck him out VERY gently. Put him in a new location and see what happens. Perhaps he has just discovered his favorite spot in the tank.

is he losing spines?? what kind of urchin is it? it is a possible water quality issue..I went through three tuxedo urchins all dying the same way, went to a short-spined urchin and i have had it for months....some are touchier than others IME..if it is starting to go "bald" then more than likely he is gonna die...

It didn't lost spines, except one when I took it off the crevice 2 days ago by a spine. Spines are sometimes a bit depressed, and sometimes completely erect.

The specie is in my first post. About the description, it is a ursin with a mix of medium thickness (about 1 mm) stripped brown/white spines and needle like shorter brownish spines. Body is about 1 inch in diameter, longest spines are about 1.5 inches.

This evening, after lamps did go off, it moved about 2 inches, Idon't know if it is a real progress but it is the first time I see it moving so much since two weeks.
