a turbo snail living in my tank died recently. the hermit crabs took care of the job for me, except for the hard circular thing "under" the snail.

This thing about removing dead things before they rott has a lot to do with how high your bio-load is and how much potential filtration is in reserve. A large tank with low bioload and a bunch of live rock can take a dead golfball sized trochus snail with out blinking, but the same tank with too many fish and not enough rock can start crashing just from the dead turbo.

I never throw them out...I just let the tank take care of it. I've never had a problem with any of my levels either. But If your tank is smaller than 55 gal, you don't have that many crabs, and you can reach it, then get rid of it.

Thanks for the help I removed earlier today. I probably could have left him based on what you said., but I will know for next time. Thanks again

My red hermit is the REASON i keep having snails turn up dead.... but he does do a good job of cleaning them out. 8O

When I lose a snail, I usually give it a day before I remove it to give my hermits and shrimp a shot at it. They usually don't disappoint.
