I have tried almost anything I can think of to get the nasty white crud on my MH bulb and reflector. So far I tried: Vinger, nail polish remover, lquid lighter fluid with no luck .
You must be kidding right? liquid lighter fluid on the MH bulb???
The reflector need not be too clean. Bulb need replacement every 6 to 12 months, and if your salt spray is that bad, maybe you need a glass shield over the bulb or raise the light up a few inches.
Have you tried plain old water? I just use a damp towel (or paper towel) to rub the bulbs and reflector down once in a while. This IS important for max light output, and is easier if you do it routinely.
I would think for certain that either vinegar or just plain old water would remove it. How are you trying to remove it? dipping the bulb or just rubbing it w/ a wet rag?
Unless the bulb is encased the crud isnt deteriorating the bulbs ability to light your tank... the best way to absolutely remove the crud is wiping with straigh vinegar or if you have chemical gloves use muriatic acid - thats only as a last resort....otherwise relax and just clean them once a week and enjoy your tank
