I just filled my 150 and a 20 gallon sump halfway. So thats 160gl but I added the rest of my tropic marin from the last bucket and nearly all the salt from an unopened 200gl bucket just to get the reading to 1.023. Seems like the buckets are short to me!

You can tell easily by weighting the bucket.... ~2.3% weight of 200 gal of water should be around 35 lb.

I've run into the other side, with
(4) 50 gal bags of IO mixing a 225 and 40 gal sump to 1.020

I think we just found our new salt study

I noticed the other day, on the fine print of an Instant Ocean bucket that it says something like use 1/2 cup per gallon to get to 1.020 -1.023 @ 75 degrees Fahrenheit

I use a hydrometer with a pump and valve cant remember the name right now but I had it calibrated with a refractometer to be accurate. It was pretty good to begin with. You can also calibrate any swing arm this way.

Hydrometers can develop deposits making them less reliable in the long run. (without a good cleaning that is)
Calibrating is suppose to work well and is always a good idea.

Temp. also plays a very large role in the measurement game.
