Well I finally got myself banned from the lfs. No big deal really these guys are terrible. Anywho I could really use some advice on transporting fish, corals and inverts from the next closest place wich happens to be a two hour car trip. Also I know there are some good places about 5-6 hours away. Would a trip that long even be possible? BTW living in sout east oregon sucks for reefkeeping. If it wasn't for this site id be broke with a crap tank to show for it.

Suuuuub question: should I find avenues of protesting these people. I mean they really suck bad. I feel terrible for the moms who go in there with there kids and come out with sick looking fish some crushed coral, a 20 gallon tank and bag of sand. Have overheard the employees on 6 diffrent occasions telling people they have to add salt water to compensate for evaporation. Thy keep a 2 foot long snowflake eel in the sump, that can access any ank through the plumbing. He eats any fish he wants (they never have clowns). The dude is loco.

I would imagine if your 'far away' place was willing to hook you up with a styrofoam box from their own shipping orders to carry the fish home in, you would be OK for 5-6 hours, as long as they maybe added some Oxygen to the holding bags. The stryrofoam might help with temperature concerns. Figure if they can overnight a box of fish, they SHOULD survuve a short trip like that.

Just out of interest, how did you get yourself banned from a LFS?

Also, if they are a crappy store, I wouldn't protest it with them, just push them to the curb...

Many LFS will put in oxygen if you explain that you have along trip. Just stick the bag in a styrafoam cooler for the trip. Not sure how long your trip is. Heck if I was coming from PDX I would spring $10 for a 10 gallon QT tank and use that as a transport.

Hope this helps

make that three...its gotta be good...hopefully you socked the S.O.B(s)...there is an LFS/small pet shop in carson who has a crappy approach also....this person doesnt clean the tanks and doesnt care about the animals...this person has also been to court on several occasions with alleged animal abuse...dont ask me why this person is still in business.... i know how you feel with irresponsible pet store owners...

for just 5-6 hours i would recomend getting some buckets with lids from a place like home depot, and fill them half way up or less.... worked great on a 2 1/2 trip for me the fish were fine, id assume theyd make it fine on a longer trip considering they get shipped in baggies overnight...

Hey sorry it took me so long to tell my story. I was banned becuase I was questioning his mislabling of a scorpion fish as a frog fish. I could have kept my mouth shut but he really pissed me off with the whole marine biology thing. I mean those two fish are pretty unique. Anyways I told him to go do something to himself and then was asked to leave. Oh well :P .

Update on transport for 5-6 hrs: While fish do that fine in a plastic bag & styrofoam container via Fedex next morning air, I'd recommend something slightly less stressful:

I'd suggest a small container such as a 1 qt or 2 qt tupperware, wedged in a styrofoam cooler box, and a battery operated airstone.

I would think about buying a 5 gallon bucket from Home Depot. Most LFS in the PDX area would fill your bucket for a return trip for free or a nominal charge.

You might consider buying a simple converter which will allow you to use your car battery (via your cigarette lighter) to run a small heater and air pump for your ride home.

Hope this helps.
