I have been seeing an onslaught of hair algae and cyano on sandbed, I have been ripping it out as fast as possible. The cyano just keeps growing back. I just added a new skimmer and filter, and I htink the nutrients my old one didnt't get out coupled with my new reef-grade lgithing is the problem. I have a very low fishload, so it is possible I am overfeeding too. Tnak is a 29 gallon, been up for a year, didn't switch lights till august. Switched filter like 3 days ago.Params all fine (pH, slainity, and ammonia/nitrate/nitrite). If I wait a little longer, keep pulling it out, and feed less, willl it go away?Anything else I can do? I do have good growth of small macroalgaes on the LR. Tank does not have a DSB or biowheel.
TIA! :D

Are you using a RO filter or any type of purification for the top-off water and water changes? Two primarily ways to import nutrients is via feedings and via water replacement. I'd cut back on feedings a little as well.

Do a substantial (40-50%) water change, siphoing out as much cyano as you can. Replace with good water and let the tank settle in. Once your new skimmer breaks in, you should be in good shape so long as you're not importing more nutrients then your exporting. Perhaps using some high quality carbon will help lower your organic levels as well. It's really all just math, albeit complicated, dynamic math ;)

Sounds good!

I'm not using a purification system, which could be a problem... and the filter cartridge for the EMperor 280 has carbon in it. It's not enough, so there's an extra media container in there that's just BEGGING to be filled...

Thanks! :D

Since my bio-load is so small that it's hard to feed less and make sure they eat, should I feed the same/tad less, just every other day or so?
THanks! :D

A 'fuge can be set up in a Rubbermaid tub.

What is really in order here is a HUGE water change, try 75% (making sure the source water is clean, too).
