How do you move a clam without damaging its basal gland. My clam is on a sand bed and it needs to be moved around for a better light location. I want to maked sure I move it properly so as to not damage the basal gland and killing it....thanks

If it is on sand bed, you can move it without damage to the gland because it is not attached to anything other than sand.

Once it got attached to rock or other substrate, you will need to either cut the thread, bother it to get the clam to get rid of the thread, chisel the clam out of the rock, or rip it out (not a good idea...) by force, etc.

Rock the clam gently back and forth for a few seconds. This will make it retract its foot. Then you can gently tilt it so the byssal threads are exposed and take a razor to them. If you can chisel around the clam, that's a good idea too (a lot messier though!) :P
