They are. I've never done a test on them, but thousands of reefers use it, and have done so for several years without any ill effects. I know it usually is worth it to get the best product, but you can get a bag twice the size of a jar of Kent Kalk for like 90 cents or something. The same Kent product is like $20.

Copper will not stick to a magnet. I'd be very curious to see exactly what that metal is as well, and if it's related to the kalk. It might just be dust, or bits from impellers.

I used to use Kent because it's expensive, overrated, nicely packaged, and I get a false sense of security from using it.

However, so is the Unocal gasoline that I dump into my gastank every week.
