I live in the poconos. Can anyone recommend stores here, in norhtern new jersey or in scranton, wilkes barre, or towards philly. Something within an hour of the poconos would be great.

The closest good store I've been to is the Hidden Reef in Philly. They have great prices and give good advice.

I used to shop at absolutely fish, but now I absolutely refuse to, after I got bad advice from them on two occasions..once they sold my wife a hippo tang for a 46 gallon tank (which I will move to a larger tank that I am planning) and then they sold me goniopora and a plate coral as a good starter, hearty coral and told me to just put them in the tank and of course both have since gone to the big reef in the sky. Now I know I'll have to go to the store with a list of possible corals that I research ahead of time. I don't know why a reef store can't give good advice. You don't go to a car dealership and tell them you want a nice car with an automatic transmission and they sell you a manual. You don't go to a doctor telling him your arm hurts and they put your leg in a cast. What really surprised me in this case, is it wasn't a teenager but a grown adult who gave me the bad advice.

What makes it worse is the owner promised to make it right for me and then I guess changed his mind and has done nothing.

I'm in the Poconos too. :D And I've used Absolutley Fish with mixed experience as well. But I have found 2 great stores.
Hanover Pet & Aquarium, on Route 10 in East Hanover, NJ and a smaller mom & pop in Bath, PA called Something Fishy, they run it out of their converted garage but have some nice stock at great prices. They have a wesite too, www.toofishy.com.
And if you're up for a little drive, That Fish Place in Lancaster is HUGE and I've had good luck with them as well.

TFP is unbeatable for dry good selection and prices.... Just make sure you're getting healthy livestock! A lot of sick fishies in their system. Their LR is butt ugly too...I mean it, it actually looks like huge turds

They are however completely renovating their fish room of 500+ tanks, so maybe that'll help maintain better water quality? Either way, their selection is temporarily at about 1/2 of what it usually is due to the renovation....should be back to normal in the next couple months.

It's like I said though, unbeatable in the dry goods dept. :)

Here's the linky

Aquarium Warehouse on Rt 4 East in Fort Lee has a pretty good selection.

There is also Rainbow Aquariums in Wayne on Rt 23 South. Right across the highway from them is That Pet Place (or maybe it is This Pet Place.)

The best selection is Absolutely Fish, the old Aquatropics, on Rt 46 West in Clifton. That is where I got some of my first stuff.

You could also try "Shear of Heaven" on Rt. 145 in Allentown. Not much on dry goods or advice. However, if you're looking for a decent SPS selection, I'd give them a try.
