I am looking for a 240+ tank and was wondering who to go with. Clarity says they use 1/2 acrylic on the 240 (96X24X24) and I think tenecor uses 3/8. Who else makes tanks and uses quality stuff?? I need it in the within the next 3-4 weeks and need someone dependable. Any experiences out there?

According to the tank thickness calculator at Cyro, that tank should be made of 3/4" acrylic. I personally would want 1", just to be safe.

When using the calculator answer the "is the tank top going to be closed" question with "yes" if euro bracing is going to be used. If you answer "no" then that tank would need to be made with 1.25". 8O

1" acrylic for a 24"hx96"w panel? 8O The only reason I would use acrylic that thick would be if the tank absolutely had to have an open top (five sided design). For a six sided design, 3/8" is a little thin for my comfort level (the front and back of the tank would have an obvious "bowed out" shape :? ). 1/2" has a substantial safety margin on a six sided aquarium of that size and you'd have to look on edge to see the small flex in the front and back panels.

The 3/4" recommendation by Cyro sounds like they want to sell more acrylic. Or they don't know that acrylic aquariums almost always have a top panel... You could deliver a tank made from 1" via airplane without bothering to land (just don't be directly under it, pull the ungodly heavy tank out of the gouge in the earth, and you're off :) ).

The two makers that were mentioned both use a six-sided design. For that design, 1/2" material is the best balance of appearance, strength, weight, and cost.

Ross

Thanks Ross,
Any recommendations on a tank maker? So far I have someone doing a 8X2X2 using 1/2 inch and 2 overflows for $1040 delivered. Does that sound in line? Clarity was about $1460 delivered. Also I think I am getting a quote on a glass tank with starfire glass in front panel for $1800 delivered, but havent gotten particulars on the last tank.

I've been doing business with Tenecor for 10 years and they haven't let me down yet. I jsut got last week a 125 tenecor, the turn key solution...everything came in on time and in great shape.

We had 4 250 gal tenecor tanks at the fish store i use to work at. Never had any problme with those either.

My 225 Clarity Plus (72x24x30) is 1/2" sides (rounded front corners) with 3/4" top and bottom. It's a beautiful tank, no doubt.

All of the prices you mention are in the ballpark, depending on the specifics. Larger or smaller overflows, number, location, and size of pre-drilled holes in the top and bottom, colored rear panel, etc., etc. You also pay more or less depending on delivery specifics (distance is very relevant), warranty, etc.

The specifics are what matter here. Keep them all in order and do your best to compare oranges to oranges. At some point, however, if the maker is reputable, and you've got the money, just buy the tank. A few hundred either way on a 240 gallon saltwater aquarium is in the noise level. Don't mean to sound elitist, but it's true. None of us are impoverished.
