Well if you feel apple juice is a good suppliment for a reef go ahead. Black powder just sits in the tank, and as for the others, just pure snake oil im afraid. Save your money and buy some proper additives. Like Strontium, Molybendun and Iodene.

Overpriced and not near as useful and proclained. I tried some and my tank looked better wen I stopped using it.

I bought a bottle and been using it and do not see any difference. Do not plan on getting another bottle when it runs out. For the money it costs I should be noticing a difference by now and I am not. I vote snake oil.

Utterly ineffectual products. 'Nuff said.

Peace,

Chip

Chip,
i'm not trying to tangle :) , but i wouldn't say "ineffectual".

i think there is a more pitch in his sales then product and most of these products seem useless, but they do have an effect... they would have to, right?

i have used the Black Powder and saw effects from it's use though i wouldn't say they were desirable.
directly coinciding with it's addition to my tank i sprouted little brown featherdusters all over my LR. when i quit using the product they subsided. now i have flimsy brown tubes all over the place. some did live on and i can't say they are attractive. i have read similiar stories about the same type of featherdusters and this product's use over at RC.

i have used Spectra Vital too, but i can't say i noted any change brought on by it's use.

i want to reitterate my satisfaction with the Phosphate magnet. this is certainly not "utterly ineffectual".
i recall a post by Randy Holmes-Farley speculating that it would be similiar in composition to Rowaphos... which i believe is similiar to Phosban.

don't misread me though, the product line is sold in a slimey fashion and the majority of products are very 'snake oil'.

i just recently learned that the Phosban was similiar and i will start using it or Rowaphos (if i could only find it somewhere).

I have used coralvital and it fixed a problem for me! I couldnt get the purple coralline algae to take off, after I used this stuff it spread like a weed. I only used for a very short period then stopped. I just wanted the purple corraline.

The main reason I stopped using it was becuase he doesnt list his ingredients and I dont like adding anything to my tank without knowing whats in it!

podman....

just as a clarification to the info you got from randy, there is a huge difference between rowa and phosban.

phosban is an unrefined derivitive of rowaphos. in a recent study performed by the Berlin Institute for water research in germany by Drs Weil and Jekel, results showed that phosban was between 30-40% less effective than rowa. phosban and salifert's 'phosphate killer' are almost identical compounds known as bayer 33. unlike rowaphos, bayer 33 has been proven incapable of removing 100% of phosphates in a sea water test sample. as an additional bonus, redox was increased 40 points in the rowa sample due to removal of phosphates and heavy metals. the price is very similar, with rowa being about $5 more for a similar size. premium aquatics should be getting their shipment any day according to them.

just to clarify, the info i read provided by Randy was speculation and it was in regards to the Weiss product and Rowaphos. Phosban was not mentioned.

could you please explain how Phosban is a derivitive of Rowaphos?
i thought Rowaphos was a brandname.

Rowaphos is the stuff i use, i would really trust anything from Marc Weiss, that is since i saw the apple juice thingy. I think someone tested the black powder and it came out fairly simmilar to miracle mud, and the Reef Vital kept screwing with my alkalinity dropping it way down. So i vowed never to buy anything bearing his cheasy "come reef with me" grin on it. Weve got someone here in England who's doing the same thing. Amasing products that you just cant do without that dont really fullfill a purpose, she's got her cheasy mug on the packs too, maybee its some kinda hypno scam, look into my eyes, look deeper, you are feeling slee...zzzzzzzzzzz 8O

While I agree that I do not like adding anything to my tank that I don't have to and these products don't tell you what's in them I will say that I changed tanks recently and took some fish from the guy who's tank I bought. After about 3 weeks the hippo tang I got from him got ich as did 2 of my other fish that I had for over 2 years. I have never had it before in my tank. I used some coral vital which claims to help prevent ich as well as promote corralline growth. Within 2 days there was no more signs of ich and that was about 5-6 months ago. I have not used it since because I don't like the(secret ingredients) but I will say it did the job without harming my inverts/corals.

I read that study.

Rowaphos really didn't come out of it that well when you read the data carefully, and allow for wet versus dry weight (Rowaphos is sold "wet"). It may also strike you as odd that Rowaphos was prepared in a manner completely different to the other reagents.

I have also heard that Jekel is in some way linked to the company supplying Rowaphos. I would certainly be interested in learning otherwise, or knowing who financed the research.

Nothing wrong with Rowaphos, just wish it was cheaper or that there was another "retail friendly" source. It's just rust, iron oxide hydroxide.......
