You should go with an in sump skimmer!

I used to have a bakpak 2r and it was a good skimmer but when I got a sump I bought an aquac urchin and man this skimmer pulls out twice as much.

go for in-sump skimmer. Otherwise get a AquaC EV series. my EV180 is pulling Sh*t out from my 110g tank

There hasn't been any new HOB skimmers lately. The usual suspects - Remora Pro, PM HOT-1, CPR Bakpak (twin), and Turboflotor multi - are still the picks of the litter. From what I've gathered online, the Remora is still preferred.

I have used both the remora pro and the turboflotor multi and can say the turboflotor is much better. I havent used the CPR skimmers. I think that sumps are much better to have for many reasons.

Gas exchange, a place for mechanical filtration, larger skimmers, heater placement, yet I cant think of any problems with one. Either reef ready tanks or lifereef overflow boxes are both very problem free to use IME.

FWIW, I used the turboflotor on the 75 with no sump for a few years and had a fine tank. Just hated having the heater in the tank and no good place to run mechanical filtration when needed. Plus the 400 watt halides heated the tank pretty fast as there was less evaporation. Which in my case was bad as the more evap I have the more kalk the kalreactor topped off.

If you can't go sump I would either use a turboflotor multi, lifereef HOT, or the Precision Marine HOT.

I agree with Ben sumps are great. I'm setting up my 75, I drained about 1/5 of the water to add LR and sand. My back gave out after LR addition. It took me 9 days to complete the sand during that time I had 3 power heads circulating the tank, and two air stones circulating the fuge.- Well before draining any water I had the system running well 9 days after draining some water my overflow box external Amiricle, very similar to the lifereef, was srill primed the U-Tube still full of water I could squirt water from a turky baster in the inside box and see flow through the U-Tube. The point being even without a drilled tank getting water to -the sump is no problem and stays fine even during a power outage. It'll run fine when the power go's on. The hardest thing is setting the flow out to match the flow in and that's just a few minutes of work. Plus you can hide all your equipment heater etc... out of site in the sump. You can also use kick ass skimmers like the ETS Super Devil (I got one and love it) or the Bullet 1,2,3 or the ev180. And if you plan right when you do your return plumbing you can do it so you don't even need /power heads in the tank cluttering it up. Well I'll get off my soap box now, and say good luck with whatever you choose, just make sure to have fun, and to enjoy it, that's the most important, or you'll never develope a passion for SW tanks.

Sean

I have an EV-120 on my 75 and it works great. I have a 20g sump and a very simple plumbing system and I don't have any problems at all (even when the power went out Saturday).
