What if I were to do this:

Order the normal Oceanic 'reef ready' tank with the 2 typical drilled holes in overflow box. But instead of using the one as a return line, just set it up as another back-up standing drain pipe. With the opening positioned perhaps slightly higher than the main drain (which will be converted to a Durso).

From the submerged return pump in the sump, I'll plumb flexible tubing up to a hard PVC manifold unit similar to this one:

http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/ ... /short.htm

It would probably have to be modified slightly due to the position of the overflow box. Maybe just cap the unit off where it hits the overflow box on both sides. Seems like this should be easy to build - just some pieces of PVC, Elbows, and Tees. And I'll get some return water movement all around the tank. Placed up high in the tank near the lip and it should be easily concealed, I think.

No additional holes drilled for closed loops (so I dont have to wait 3 months to get my tank). No additional powerheads, in theory (well, ok maybe I'll find I need one strategically placed somewhere down the line).

But what do you guys think of this plan? Can a single return pump handle this sort of manifold unit well? if so, what pump would you recommend (being careful not to go over the overflow box rating here, right?)

Does anyone sell anything this cool out there?

I appreciate all the input youse guys (or gals) are giving me. I'm learning a lot here, I think. Cant wait to get started though.

I don't see why that wouldn't work. Does the tank have two overflow boxes, or just one? Why don't you just have the return go through the hole made for it? Do you think the standpipe won't be able to handle all the flow?
