It's interesting that this discussion is based on one man's editorial of a proposal that no one, other than the writer apparently, has read..... :?

Hello what he posted is what it read on the link that he had. I read it word for word. I like Bush for some of the things he has done. I just think he is stupid for what he is wanting to do

The experiment was actually proposed by The Pacific International Center for High Technology Research (PICHTR), which seeks to evaluate the viability of pumping liquid carbon dioxide into deep ocean waters as one way to control the build-up of CO2 in the atmosphere. The experiment is known as the “CO2 Ocean Sequestration Field Experiment” and more information about it can be found at http://www.co2experiment.org/.

the reason this is a stupid idea is because we're not reducing greenhouse gases by pumping it into the ocean, the same amount will still end up in the atmosphere, anywhere from 100-1000 years, later while this isnt really in our lifetime still its not solving a problem, its just making it worse for later generations.

Aren't we exiting a small ice age right now anyways?
I recall a university geography course where the prof full on admitted that human involvement in global warming isn't well understood because we aren't the sole cause of it.

Sounds like a smart professor. Probably had tenure since most liberal universities would crucify a prof for saying something like that.

The 1970s was the coldest decade in hundreds of years ........If man made CO2 does have an impact , it was to keep the world from slippng into another ice age. {thats a good thing} I remember living in Florida in 1982 when a record cold temp killed off millions of 100 plus year old trees ......Just how much colder might it be in America without Man Made Co2 warming the world? {I like artifical warm much more then natural cold, even if the world is naturally cooling.........Kinda like a comet natually hitting the earth and wiping out the planet....A Five mile wide comet hitting the earth is quite a natuaral thing .....I want man made intervention.

Yanno I'm a pretty big politics geek. I enjoy a good debate, especially well thought out ones. But I think there is a time and place for it and on a saltwater website is not really the place for. The article is interesting enough but perhaps should be posted in off topic. Not trying to make waves with anyone so please don't take this offensively.

Interesting point of view.

I can remember when I was a kid here in Miami a bad freeze that actually left ice on the cars in the morning and snow flurries came down lat at night. I remember my dad waking me up at 3am to see snow for the first time in my life. Of course it melted the second you touched it, but it was about 30F. It has never been that cold again. So is that evidence for global warming? Well the fact is I can also remember some sweltering summers when the car would get so hot you had to start it and stand outside while the AC ran to cool it down or else you would get a third degree burn from touching the metal seatbelt clip. I'm talking high 90s right on the water. We also haven't had a summer that hot in over a decade.

So summers and winters have been more mild. I like it! 8)

Sure the off topic section is for political discussion, but this thread is about marine science. Just because Bush is involved doesn't mean it isn't relevant to saltwater.

You guys should know that temperature extremes are not used to calculate and identify trends (though they may be associated with them and sometimes in paradoxical ways).

It is the average daily temperature that is used to determine global warming or cooling trends.

I thought the topic would be interesting here, at the minimum because the Bush Administration considered adding CO2 to oceans - some reef aquarists add CO2 to their aquariums.
