Hello:

I am looking for a way to automate my water level in my sump. What I need is some kind of switch that will turn on the RO system when the water drops to a certain level and then turn the water maker off when the sump water is high enought.

Are there any suggestions?

Sure.

And Welcome to RDO!

You want either a float valve connected to the ro, or a float switch connected to a pump that pumps from a recepticle of ro.

Both methods have their own pros and cons. If you do a search on 'float switch' or 'float valve' you shold find much reading.

Let us know if that answers your questions.

float valves are much easier to use(setup) and are a good bit cheaper. long story short, switches will slightly aid in preserving the life of the DI cartridge in the RO system, or if you don't have DI, then the quality of water will be ever so slightly better.

Switch is a better way to go, just depends if you're willing to pay for that over the valve.

Waco,
I just bought a spectura pure system for like 120.00 and it works great. It has a small float vlave and and pressure sensor as a back up. I hooked it right up to my ro/di and all has been perfect.

Thanks all. Futher research leads me to believe that I need a LLC. They did not have them around when I started out. I guess that I have been out of the main stream for awhile.

I heard that you should not do two things to a RO/DI unit( i will find the web page and return with the link)
1. don't use the first three or four gallons,Double Dirty Water
2. don"t make small batches, wastes water and filter

The article is brand new and written by a Ro/Di maker,

So if it's true,i would not use the unit itself for topping off,
I'll go find it

the RO failure was the result of something called membrane creep (repeated, short-term cycling) that was caused by leaving the RO unit hooked up to my sump for continuous auto-top-off.

Same thing happened to me when I hooked my RO/DI system to a a float valve in the sump of my 400g for continuous top-off while I was out of the country for 3 weeks. The RO membrane failed as a result (at least I believe this was the casue). It took me 6 months to rectify the damage that had been done. I posted the details last summer.
