a few interesting developments in my reef....about 5 minutes ago, my mandarins spawned and this time the female released an eraser sized white ball, i presume to be an egg or eggs....any way, i watched in horror as my scopas tang greedily ate the white ball of mandarin preciousness...

on a side note, i installed a bed of halimeada......the tang instantly seemed more at ease and after 5 or 10 minutes began munching away at it.....he obviously likes it and i'm glad i got such a good amount....the tank also has a more natural look to it.....it sure won't hurt my pod population either.....this stuff is VERY green in actinic!!

Awesome, glad to hear your tank is thriving!

I got 2 orders of live copepods yesterday from inland aquatics. GREAT people. Added them to my tank and my mandarin was a little more excited than usual. I hope she doesnt eat them all before they can populate. I wil have a refugium up soon and I will order 2 more bags. I want to make my mandarin get as fat as a puffed up puffer fish LOL

[/quote]Don't insult me with such ignorant remarks.

None of your statments apply to me.

Also, where is your "proof" that it was not?

I have more than enough proof that he was cyanide poisened and I will not share any of my information or findings with you because, simply, I don't have to or even give a flying frick to.

I for one think that seamaiden gave you fantastic advice, which should be heeded. IME, mandarins do best in a well established tank of at least 100 gallons with abundant live rock. Also, it sounds like you may be describing amphipods in your tank, rather than copepods (based on the floating carapace you described). People are trying to help you and your fish out, try not to get so defensive when advice is offered.

Is yours a spotted or psychedelic mandarin? Spotted are more likely to take offered foods from the water column than the psychedelics IMO.

ps. I'd be very interested in hearing about your proof of cyanide poisoning.

try getting a few cleaner shrimp, they will reproduce like crazy and your mandarin should love to eat the babies.

What you witness there is not Mandarin eggs. Most likely, 100% certain was that you Mandarin pooped. Scopa Tangs are well known to eat poops of other fishes.
When Mandarins spawn, which happened in the evening as the light turn out, the pair swims up the water column. As they reach the top, both release sperms or eggs and quickly dart down. The sperm looks like a smoke puff, while the eggs are clear and difficult to see, about .5 mm in diameter. Most of the eggs are by itself. A few may stick together in-group up to 8 or so eggs.
The female mandarin often so engorge with eggs that it seems like she has a ball in her stomach that is about to make her explode.
I have a pair in my tank that have spawned almost every night.

Oh WOW, I missed this one. You're a real gem when you get going, eh? You haven't got anything to share because you haven't got anything. You ever hear of SLURP GUNS? Probably not. I can't expect most hobbyists to understand anything about the trade, however, I will thank you to lose the attitude, as I delivered nothing similar your way.

Try doing a little research before you pop off with such rudeness. ;)

Thank you for the support, SR (one of my all-time favorite scifi flicks). My knowledge (and subsequently my advice) is garnered via many routes - my own decades of experience, first as a hobbyist, then working retail, my own business, and the import/export end of the trade, much reading, as well as my personal communications with other, quite knowledgeable folks. I must say I learned quite a lot about the current state of refugia, as well as other husbandry techniques while helping with the book (Natural Marine Aquarium-Reef Inverts). I believe that Bob wouldn't have hired me all those years ago (nor invited me to work in my current capacity) if he didn't think I had even a little good knowledge under my belt, but, c'est la vies, yes?

Ok.. now, this statement, lovely in its poetry (because, Abu, whoever you be, you have a gift of prose), suddenly becomes cruelly hilarious in light of this..

Accept my heartfelt apologies for the amusement I feel upon reading this. Forgive me, even, as I've had a rather rough past couple of days, and some lighthearted amusement at tangs eating mandarin poo brings a sore (and sorely needed) smile to my face. :)

So, Matt, you admit that you are a tatlle since you tell others that ReefRian is a lady?

Sorry, can't help taking a cheap stab at you ;)
