wow.

I haven't been around here much lately, so I'm sure this is totally old news... but I just finally got around to trying Joe's Juice on my ever-more-infested 60 reef.

Aptasia = lose

Joe = win

I'm so happy I can't stop crying.

Well, I put 4 peppermints in about 2 months ago, and after that only ever saw one of them hiding in the back corner. They never made a dent in the aptasia, and I honestly haven't seen that "one" shrimp since the joes juice, but I never really look for him either.

A few of us here have used the juice and had unexplained shrimp losses afterwards.

Don't get me wrong, the juice eradicated unwanted aptasia/majanos with extreme prejudice as promised but please let us know if you start loosing shrimps. Wish the owner/creator of joesjuice would let us know what were putting in our tank(ingredients).

Last time I talked to MattM of (former) Inland Reef, he said he talked to Joe. Joe wouldn't tell him what was in it and was rather belligerent about it.

This is a well written paragraph which sums up my thoughts on the subject.

Joe's Juice? And Other "Magic" Elixirs - 12/25/03

hello and happy holidays,
Merry Christmas my friend>
I was wondering if you had any information regarding a product that I just saw on the Premium Aquatics web site that claims to kill aiptasia and majano anemones. Does it work?
many such products have come and gone on the market. None to the best of my knowledge have scientifically demonstrated how it is that they functionally (or magically) kill that one or two pest cnidarians that we hate so much (Aiptasia or Anemonia in this case) without also killing or stressing the other (desirable - corals/polyps/anemones) cnidarians in the display. To further underscore this position... read the list of ingredients on such products... or try to at least. You'll find very few that list their active or total ingredients. Add to that snappy name and you get a fascinating expression of unchecked capitalism at work. Does this mean the product doesn't do exactly what it claims? Not at all... it may very well indeed live up to its claims. But I personally will not put any product in my aquarium that is not defined (ingredients) or proven. We have too great of an investment in our aquariums (lives and thousands of dollars) to trust to whim. Furthermore... even if a product exists that k8ills the aiptasia/anemonia... it is only treating the symptom (the pest anemones) and not your problem (lack of quarantine to screen these pests from coming in...and then inadequate water flow and/or overfeedig/misfeeding which allows them to thrive). Point blank: pest anemones do not grow from thin air or water, as it were. If they spread in the tank... its because they are getting excess nutrients from somewhere. Do address the source and that will stop their spread and allow for a more leisurely extraction of the pest.
and do you know what is the composition of this?
nope... and I would not take products with unlisted ingredients for free
I have soft corals in my tank (xenia, leather, mushrooms) and lots of polyps and zoos. Also a tang, clownfish and pajama cardinals. Thanks for your help, Ben
do read through our archives here at wetwebmedia.com There is much writ on pest anemone control (FAQs.articles, etc). Do a keyword search form the home page (tool at page bottom) to make the search easier if you like. Best of luck

I've found it no better than good hot kalk paste, and it's about the same amount of work.

It did it's job, but the kalk disolved into the tank and I know it wasnt going to hurt, who knows what the joe's juice did

I did use it in a 5g with a mantis, and it didnt hurt the mantis

I did nail a bristleworm by accident, and it died promptly

I've used Joe's in a very overcrowded nanocube (total water volume probably somewhere around 9 gals), with a cleaner, 2 peppermints, and a sexy shrimp. No losses of shrimp or snails. I've squirted in right in the middle of zoos...aptaisia gone, zoos still happy. I have more than 23 corals in that nano and if there was something in Joe's that killed, I imagine I'd have been the first to notice in that small of a tank. Just my .02 :D

Been using it for a couple of months now. None of the aptasia have returned, but I've added new LR once in awhile and found a new aptasia or 2 that I zapped. Last night I found some sort of anemone on an underhanging rock (clear, quarter sized, white bulbous tips and sweepers) that I decided didn't need to be there. Zapped it too. Everything still alive and kicking today (except the zappee).

I frequent RC quite a bit, and I don't remember ever seeing anyone with shrimp issues and Joe's over there? Must be hundreds of people who are using it.

[edited to add] I finally got around to doing a search to see where these references to "Joe's might kill your shrimp" came from. Less than 3 people lost a total of 4 shrimp between them, and you've all gotten paranoid and think it requires a warning? :wink:

From the post I read, one of the people lost another cleaner a few months later to old age...makes you wonder how old the first ones were? It sounded like a few of you were more PO'd that whoever Joe is, he wouldn't divulge his ingredients, and that set the stage for the rumor mill. Sounds like a reasonable attitude for the Joe's owner to take to me? I'm here to tell ya that if I invented something that cycled a tank in 24 hours and worked without fail, I wouldn't be telling anyone what was in it either...LOL 8)

It says patent pending fwiw there is not patent pending, I checked, if they apply for a patent they must list the contents.

Personally, I like to know what I'm putting in my tank, that's just how I am, joe's juice did work for me, but I still want to know what I'm putting in my tank.

FWIW, I've used Joe's in my tank a couple times to eradicate some aiptasia and it worked great. I also have 2 cleaner shrimp that live right in the area where I was squirting the Joe's and they were unaffected.

*shrug*
I've never used it myself, just looked up that info and yes, I also do not like dumping mystery chemicals into my tanks. I've learned the hard way.

It tried it. It seemed to work better than just kalk. No problems, no deaths of anything but the beast.

I also think the WWM paragraph in this thread is a little misleading. Using a Q tank can help stop the introductiono of Aptasia into your system, but the question still remains - how to get rid of them once they are in.

You would have to inspect each rock & coral so good to keep them out.

When they are juvinal, they are so hard to see

I do enjoy killing them though, I get to swear at the ones I cant reach too
