I just purchased a submersible Rule sump pump to use a backup in case my main Sequence pump should ever fail. I probably would have it in place for a week or 2 while the Sequence was repaired. The return from the basement is about 30 feet- could I use a garden hose?

I know they say on them "not for drinking water" although I'm not sure if they are toxic or not. Hmmm... I guess they have metal fittings also...

I'm not sure where I say them, but there are hoses that have fittings made of plastic. It may have been Home Depot. Usually the tubing that says "NOT FOR DRINKING WATER OR ICE MAKER" are made of vinyl. Vinyl is considered cancerous. I use vinyl tubing on my skimmer(regular clear tubing) and everything is fine. However, without an ingredient list you will not be able to tell why it is not intended for drinking water.

All garden hoses, in NY anyway, say not for drinking.

I have seen the plastic fittings, and they can be added onto the hose too...

I guess all those years drinking from the hose in the summer as a kid wasn't such a good idea?

You can get garden hose that is NSF certified for potable water. May need to mail order. As for the fitting, you can always cut it off and replace it with a plastic ones.

If garden hose is too much hassle, you can use vinyl hose asn ANEMONEBUFF suggested. There are a tons of other options, such as rigid PVC, spa hose, PE hose, or a combination of one or more above. You imagination is the limit.

Then, some people can tell you that copper in tank for two weeks has minimal effect on coral, so a toxic hose won't matter either :?

FWI some garden hoses have an anti-mildew coating on the interior of the hose. I don't imagine that would be good for your tank at all!

Call the company that makes them and ask why the hose is not for drinking water. If they say because it's vinyl. Then you can use it.

It just hit me....try the inground sprinkler section at HD. They have a whole bunch of different fittings/tubing that they don't have at the plumbing section. Not sure if they say the same though.

Actually I tried emailing last summer cause my kids (and I) drink out of the hose. No responses.

I can always get regular flex tubing- it just gets a bit expensive at 30 feet for stuff that won't collapse...

Go down to a RV dealer - RVers use a special inexpensive garden type hose that is designed for potable water.

I wouldn't use any rubber gardenhose or washing machine black hoses. Take a drink from one and you will probably be able to taste a chalky rubber taste. I doubt your tank inhabitants would like rubber funk in the water.

If you flush a hose well (30 seconds at good flow) drinking from it won't be a problem, nor will a short passage of water into a well rinsed hose for the tank.

The catch is not to use any water (for anything) that has been sitting in the hose... the plastics used leach pthalates and other components that are not good... but in general its not a risk.

Actually, if the hose gets hot (like outside in summer) It breaks down and you get some chemicals in the line the next time water goes thru. For a person drinking it there is no problem..we can handle a bit of icky stuff. But for my fishies, I want something *totally* inert.

Best bet would be to contact home depot or whatnot and see about getting potable water hose. You can usually get it in long lengths (our HD has it on a reel)

I *THINK* anything that's food grade would be ok. I get food grade buckets instead of standard 5gal. (prolly same thing as HD, just $1 more with a sign saying 'Food Grade' LOL) Can be picked up at restaurant supply store.

if you flush it for a good minute or two i dont see any problem with using it. when water sits in the hose, the chems leach into the water sitting in the hose, but if the water is running through, i dont think the contact time is gonna be long enough to actually leach anything into the water

Dan, I just bought some 1/2"id tube at HD. It's vinyl, and was under $3 for 10 feet. I'm sure 5/8" (garden hose size) isn't that much more expensive. Then just add some 3/4"-5/8" hose barbs, some nylon pipe clamps and you're good to go.

HCl,you just got your tags mixed up. {url] goes first, and {/url] goes after(with the correct "["). FWIW, this board will put those in for you. all you have to do is paste the link.
