where is the best place to order black pvc fittings. I need to help disguise a return in an acrylic tank. Is it ok to paint white fittings? If so what type of paint??

Joe,
The black pipe and fittings that are carried by Lowes and Home Depot are ABS plastic and not PVC. The sizing is the same and both are aquarium safe. ABS uses a different glue than PVC.

IIRC, some ABS have anti-fungal ingredients imbedded in the polymer, so I've heard some mixed opinions about their safety for reef tanks.

Black fittings are hard to find and expensive :/ I'll see if I can dig something up.

I have used this paint for many years. I always paint my pipes because the white sticks out too much against the black background. I have seen no effects from doing this. I think once the paint is completely cured, it shouldn't be toxic. Think of it like acrylic cement (weldon), they use that to put tanks together but once it's cured, it isn't toxic anymore. I think we have many items in our system that we could relate to this.

Dug this out of the past.....

Anyone used the grey PCV very thin walled it is made for some sort of home filter or vacuflo system? It's sold at home depot. Can't see why it would not work, looks better then white.

Grey PVC is for electrical use. It has a higher melting temp. I dont know if it is aquarium safe.

Thanks,

Look for the NSF label for potable water (PW). If it does not have the PW label, it is not safe for drinking water, and I won't use it for my tank, FWIW.
