do you ever have to service in-line pumps like iwaki and little giant, like with oil and stuff? how about powerheads?

Iwaki, no.

LG, some do.

Powerhead needs no oil, but like the pump head of regular pump, you do need to clean it once a while.

Yes, definetly! All pumps need to be cleaned of calcium deposits at least ounce a year. The easiest way I have found is to soak the pump head parts in pool acid from the local hardware store. The only pumps I don't clean are RIO pumps only because most don't last that long.

FWIW, I just microwave a small cup of white vinegar, and dump the impeller in there after ward. Make the whole house smell like vinegar for a half an hour, but it is surely more safe than pool acid (HCl).

I clean my impellers about once every 6 months. OH YEAH, my RIO pump broke, does anyone know about warranty work on this POS???
