I just saw my Purple Tang rip out a blue-legged hermit crab from its shell, and began to eat its exposed end. I guess he couldn't wait until today's second feeding.

Do any of you have tangs that have done this? Will this be an ongoing issue?

Nope, but my tangs to eat meat. I feed a mix of mysis, fish eggs and chopped shrimp and the tangs love it. Sounds like you need to supplement the algae with some meat.

Hehe. Most tangs are ominvores, not herbivores like some literature suggest. It's just algae puts up less fight then a crab ;)

I wish I had the time to watch my fish this much. If it isnt flake food, I don't think my fish would know what to do with it.

I've had him since he was the size of a silver dollar. I guess he's just coming into his own. He's starting to attack the Kent Scraper. He even tried to slash me when I was mounting a frag.

IMO Tangs are notorious bullies. No matter what you put in the tank with them, they want to be the king.
