This coming weekend I'll be doing a water change on my tank and am wondering about experience you all may have w/ Amquel Plus.

I usually use TetraAqua's AquaSafe but after testing treated tap water last weekend have found it may not be my best possible option as there was enough nitrate still in the water to be a bit concerned...

TIA :D

ive like ammquel + to dechlorinate and it says it will reduce A,N,N but only so much per setting, youll have to read the bottle and i guess check the water to see if its where you want it...i personally am ok with Ammquel + :D

I use it when I transport fish or corals. keeps the ammonia in check.

For water changes I use RODI water. Look at the money you'll spend on amquel over the course of year, then compare it to RODI.

Amquel plus is similar to Prime - used for controling ammonia. If your just trying to eliminate chlorine all you need is regular amquel.

Doesnt that stuff have some slime coat in it? I would'nt want it in my reef?

I second the RO/DI where a carbon block removes all chlorine. Or in you must use tap and want to declorinate try a carbon block and add on canister from buckeye field supply. This would be a great cheap way to remove the chlorine

Amquel is the only dechlorinator I will use. About 10 years ago I tested most of the major brands and Amquel was the only one that was phosphate free.

Howdy,

I only use Amquel as well. Now, as for the nitrate reducing proerties, I can't say. If you have nitrates, chances are you are using your tap water. this is big mistake. When I first started in the hobby, I was using the tap water at my apartment, not knowing any better. I kept wondering why my nitrates were so high and why I kept getting so many algae blooms. I finally tested my tapwater and found it to have a nitrate level close to 100ppm. The color almost went off the testing kit's chart.

I would stop using your tapwater and invest in a RO/DI unit or at the very least use some form of purified water. I used sparkletts until I found a good source of Catalina ocean water. I don't know of any products that you can just add to the water and reduce the nitrate level. Most nitrate reducing products involve the formation of bacteria to turn the nitrate into nitrogen gas.

NET/NET - Amquel is a great product, and I recommend buying the gallon jug from an online supplier. You are going to have to use a different source for your tank water if you want to have low nitrates from the get go.

peace,

Scott.

I would also interject that there is no water treatment (amquel included) that will remove the minerals found in municipal water. Even a slight amount of copper from pipes can be disasterous to your aquarium. Other dangerous minerals found in tap water: Hexavalent Chromium; Lead; Ferrous Oxide; Mercury.
